Prior to that it was an as-needed newsletter. It became twice weekly in July 1995 and only started daily transmission in February, 2001. With every change in frequency there have been complaints and enthusiasts. We will never please all of the subscribers all of the time. The new software gives us many more options (seen any regurgitated Digests lately? noticed the absence of spam?) while maintaining control (no ads or host site rules to follow, other than those made by the producers and the software). While it takes getting used to, like a new hairdo or job, I am sure the initial reaction to it will evolve into an acceptance. Personally, I was concerned over the switch but was aware of the technical issues that made it necessary. While Joey could revert it back the old 486 and software, I am not sure we'd be better off - lack of software options and an unstable system. I am not sure I'd even want to ask Joey to do it considering all the work he's put into getting the Digest into a form with options, and on a stable footing. I think kudos are owed to Joey for all his effort. I am beginning to like the daily format. It is more spontaneous but easier to deal with than the UBL which relies on its server to provide every individual message - can be slow at times. I think we'll stick with this format for the time being. I hope you all will too. All, The daily digest gets my vote,I much prefer this way to the weekly and bi-weekly incarnations,I too will NOT be unsubscribing, despite having a look in at the ubb,I find both can run along side each other with no problems. I totaly agree with Joey on his top five BEST Numan covers, couldn't have picked them better, the Marylin Manson cover is my fav cover of all time, but for the worst cover EVER has to be the Molly Half Head version of AFE,truly awefull!!! For some decent Numan covers check out a band called "Carnival"(friends of mine and bot "Crazie!").They have held a few Numan/80's nights in their native Glasgow, for a second oppinion just ask Ben. Cheers William Wilson (Glasgow Crazie!) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 13:20:17 00100 From: axemanpvt@btinternet.com Subject: Daily/Weekly Digests?? It would seem opinion is divided on this. I was wondering Joey, how easy would it be to continus the daily digests as now, but to also produce a weekly roll- up of the past 7 days messages to produce a weekly edition? It would give everyone the choice then to either read daily or to wait for Sunday's big kahuna!!!!! What does everyone think? If it can bet set up programatically top auto send like the daily's it would be dead cool. Perhaps people could also choose to subscribe to one, the other or both if that is their inclination :-) I do appreciate the work that goes into the digest. It's a thankless task. Well done and keep it up!!! Luv on Ya!!! This should be a time of getting together and having a great time. Sure, some of us are going to travel a bit to see Gary, but that is what being a fan is all about. I am looking into PriceLine.Com right now for flights, rental cars and hotels for a few cities. At least we all know that we will have an opportunity to meet and chat with Gary, Gemma, Ade, Steve and the rest of the band after each concert. So, chin up America! Our time has arrived! This is hard to write but I guess therapeutic and you might like to know. When Gary toured the UK recently the nearest venue to me (Newcastle) was Glasgow (3 hours drive or so). I ordered tickets for myself, my future brother-in-law Liam, and my oldest friend Ernie. Ernie and I had known each other for most of our lives, nearly thirty years or so, and had grown up together listening to Numan. On New Year's Eve I asked him to be Best Man at my forthcoming wedding and he was overjoyed. Ernie hadn't bought any new stuff for years, but I played him Pure and he was very impressed, and was keen to buy it, and very keen to see the gig. The tickets for 19th February were ordered and arrived, and I was looking forward to the gig. Sometime on the evening of 14th or early 15th February, Ernie committed suicide. He'd had some difficulties over the last few years, but he assured me that things were getting better and he was more cheerful than I'd seen him for a long time. He left a wife and two small children. Any thoughts I had of going to the gig were naturally out of the window - no way could I go after that. His wife asked my to lead the tributes at the funeral, 26th Feb. I wrote a few words, then I quoted from "A Child with the Ghost". Given that Gary wrote this song about the death of Paul Gardiner, they were stunningly appropriate. I have played this song a lot since then, and they have certainly helped me. Incidently, I also arranged for them to play "Trois Gymnopedies" at the Committal. I like to think he would have approved. Am I the person writing this message, or am "I" the message itself? We forget entire swaths of our personal histories; that person that lived them is gone, replaced by a doppleganger. Our bodies move by habit; look in our eyes. We have become ciphers, empty vessels to be filled by whatever passing interest takes momentary hold. Our membership in the Numan fan club itself is but a distraction from the reality that we no longer exist absolutely. We are pure contingencies, living only through the other to which we can attach ourselves. Do you begin to see there really is no me at all? You think you know Mr. Wall? Take a look the other way. * * * "You know what you are" --Ministry ------------------------------ End numan@garynumanfan.nu Digest [03/27/2001 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, datta@cs.uwp.edu, Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: numan@GaryNumanFan.NU If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL numan@garynumanfan.nu or DIGEST numan@garynumanfan.nu ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
