For those of you attending the DC show, I'm at a loss for coming up with a good location for a pre-show get-together, so I'm proposing we all meet in line before the show (which will form around 6 I'm pretty sure)......there will be lots of time to connect before the doors open and before the show inside......the 9:30 club is a great 'mingling' venue and has fab food but pricey drinks (fair warning). We're down to one week and counting and I can hardly wait!!!! Anyone coming into the area interested in meeting up earlier in the day, please email me personally and let me know when you may be coming in.....perhaps we can meet at my house or something before hand.....I'm off all that week (whee!!)........this goes for doubly for those of you I already KNOW are coming (Zerfboy, Jim Collins, etc.) Talk to you all later! Amidst all the quibbling about the quality of posts to the list...I figured I'd do something about it. I'm currently reading "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life - The History of the Disc Jockey" by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. (I'm an ex-radio and club DJ) In the section on the birth of Hip Hop there's this paragraph about Afrika Bambaataa in the Bronx in the late 70's: >>The audiences which gathered around Bambaataa were as open-minded >>as he, and if anyone dared to get snobbish about music, he >>delighted in tricking them, whipping in some obscure track and then >>gleefully informing them that they'd just danced to The Beatles or >>The Monkees. Taped TV themes and commercials, Hare Krishna chants, >>Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Flying Lizards, even Gary Numan, all >>made their way onto his system.< I just love it when Gary gets props. I think it some how vindicates my fierce defense of him and his music for all these years. I got so tired of Gary being the whipping boy of the UK press and non-existent everywhere else, that I really love it when he gets mentioned by his peers or younger musicians. Isn't that what this list has been about? Sharing our experiences of his music, his concerts, and ultimately helping each other keep the faith when no one else really cared? I don't have the time to post much these days...my job keeps my incredibly busy. But I read the digest every day....and love reading the posts from those numanoids who I met during Gary's last tour in 1998. And yes, I just pass over the ones I don't care for, easy enough. Can't wait until May 4th! This clearly proves that some interesting stuff is being spread around with this list, not only cyber bullshit. Was this all I had to say. No, I do have some comments on the "Purified" answers of Gary in his own interview. I am very happy he doesn't see "Cars" and "Are friends electric?" as a burden any longer. Everybody is entitled to have her/his own opinion about these tracks and whether or not they should still be part of a live show. But think of this, not a lot of very popular bads/artists do write one real "classic" song, and Gary wrote 2 (!!!). Artists that were far more popular in the 80s like Human League, Spandau Ballet, Soft Cell, Thompson Twins, Adam & the Ants, Duran Duran, are almost completely forgotten (Soft Cell's "Tainted love" is almost a classic, but then again, it's a cover). And even today, Cars and AFE do not sound outdated. So think about this the next time those both songs are being minimalised by a fan or anyone else as a matter of fact. (PS: I do regret that still loads of people do not know that Gary has continued to make records 20 years after those songs, but hey, that's just a fact we got to live with). Why do I suddenly mention this? Well, since Sacrifice/Exile/Pure, I haven't listened to The Pleasure Principle. I have last weekend in my car, and I was surprised by the sheer brilliancy of that record, baring in mind it's 22 years old.... On another note, I do not understand Gary continiously stating he can't play songs live of 7/8 albums because he doesn't have the right equipment or instruments. (being fretless bass, saxophone, female voices, etc...). I wonder why these songs can't be reworked in a "new" version (read 'purified version'). He's done it with older tracks, even Cars already. Seems like a nice challenge to me. I still hope that the song 'Pure' will be released as a single soon. I noticed during the last tour that the crowd enthousiastically sings the chorus along. Nice.
