Hello Numanoids Of The World (and the US Crazies!). Jim "The Machman" Napier back in your computer with still another report from the ribbons of highway that connect these awesome Numan shows. Last night's show in Royal Oak, Michigan was awe-inspiring! I believe the venue was the largest yet, and Gary had filled it nearly to capacity. I was concerned at first. When the first band, Grand Theft Audio, performed, there were only a row and a half of people up by the stage, with most of the attendees WAY back by the tables enjoying a brew. I definitely didn't want Our Friend Electric to come out and look at the turnout. But fans started to flood the building during Gwenmars, and by the time Gary commanded the stage, it was almost wall to wall Numanoids (whew!). It was good to see Gwenmars back with Gary after their snafus crossing into Canada. I talked with the lead singer as the roadies were picking up their gear expressing my sorrow at their bad luck. Gary and Steve had TONS of room to move around (and Gary STILL got beaned int the cheek with Steve's guitar! I saw no bruises after the show so not to worry!). There was a friend of mine from England behind me who has seen Gary about 250 times since 1984, and even HE had never seen what was about to take place. During the middle of the set, someone thought it was a good idea to toss a sparkly smoke bomb on the stage which landed nearly in front of David Brooks on the keyboards. The "Big G" rushed on stage to stomp it out while desperately trying to keep it away from the 18 or so electrical appliances on stage. Gary winced as it flew past, but kept on singing for us. Always up to the challenge, Steve Harris dove into the smoke on the other side of the stage to play part of the song in the moody, but smelly, smoke that arose from the incident. The staff of the historic theater pulled out flashlights and looked for flames around the equipment, but found none. The show was as powerful as any other on this tour, if not more, and the people were eating it up. I met quite a few folks who would also be attending the next 3 or 4 shows. As we were in line for the meet and greet, I met the members of Grand Theft Audio outside who were searching in vain for their van, and asked if I had seen it. I could be of no assistance. I seemed to be appointed the official cameraman of the crowd as I was asked by many to take pictures of them with Gary. "The Big G" said they enjoyed the day off and went to see a film. Major props to Mike for putting on the pre-show party at the Royal Oak Brewery (and for the beer!). We actually managed to get the staff to play The Best Of Gary Numan 1978-1983 to the 60-70 patrons enjoying a beer there! Way to go! As always, I will try to keep the road reports coming, but the distances out west are vast, and most of the time will likely be spent driving, but be assured I will make an effort for you. I'm off to finish rocking the continent! I've always thought the term 'Numanoid' was slightly derogatory myself, but I can't think of a better one to be honest. 'Nufan' seems far too twee; 'Noid sounds like some disease of the nether regions; and Numan Fan is just boring. By the way, since this is my maiden post to the list: I currently live in Surrey, and I first became a fan of Gazza after hearing and buying Down In The Park - a very bizarre record at the time. Actually, 1978-1982 was one of the more musically interesting times I think, what with Punk shattering into new-wave, Oi, and the Mod stuff, plus the sprouting of the Goth stuff via Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus et al., and who can forget those fluffy New Romantics, ahhh - them were the days heheh. If anyone is interested, I'm an avid IRC'er (EFNet, #boneyard #mirc) should anyone want to pop by and say 'Hello'. My client is always (nearly) connected, even though I'm not always actually there, so you can even leave me a message. Just out of interest - does anyone know how sales of Pure are going? I only ask because I went into the Virgin Megastore last week and there was 1 copy in the Numan section, this week there are about 10, so I assume they're selling reasonably. Anyway, gotta run to the pub for my medicinal lager - catch you later.
