Hello all, Last nights performance at Bogarts in Cincinnati was brilliant! Each band was "on", but Team Numan hit the hardest. I am so happy today, after waiting 20 years to see Gary Numan perform, and then getting a chance to briefly chat with him. Hello to Jim Napier, and the Chicago Numan crew who were so friendly, yet I forgot everyone's names...shame on me. About the "what shall we call ourselves" query... Why must we label ourselves? I am a Gary Numan fan, that's all -short, sweet, and to the point. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Cincinnati makes it onto the possible second wave of the Pure 2001 tour. take care, t3rry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 09:52:25 -0700 From: Mark Subject: Bogarts show! Long read Lady's and gentleman, boys and girls...... Yes, boys and girls.. Numan played at Bogarts last night in Cincinnati Ohio. This club is a true all ages club, that still serve alcohol, IF you have a hand stamped. More on the theater later, lets get to the show events! There were 2 opening acts, the first called Grand Theft Audio I believe, which I can tell you nothing about. Missed them altogether. I did get there in time for Gwenmars, and I think they were fairly well received. Nice artsy video back drop played while they performed, and they were not booed of the stage as so many other Numan opening acts have been over the years. Now, I have to say, I do not like having 2 opening acts, nothing against either band. All that tear down and set up time is tedious when you are waiting to see an artist you have waited years to see. When Numan hit the stage, he showed energy that carried into the crowd. He looked like he was in top shape, and appeared to really be enjoying himself. The sound was so much better than what I heard on his '98 US tour right from the start. Although the vocals were a bit splotchy now and then, the overall mix level was pretty good considering the apparent use of a house system. The set list was pretty much the same as the prior US shows, but I was too busy enjoying the show to take notes on the exact listing. I will say he played a healthy dose of his new stuff, plus the big three(DITP, AFE, CARS) which was to be expected, but we also got treated to the harder version of Metal and Films! The lighting was fairly nice yet basic, again considering this is a club tour with no real stage show other then the energy of the band, and the lights.. Keep in mind all you lucky Brits, that you had all those wonderful years of massive stage shows. ahh, to be able to go back in time to see just one of his farewell shows.....Most of the venues Gary is playing here in the states are very similar in that since. They are music halls or clubs, with very little room on stage to have much of a set, even if Gary wanted to. I am not sure if the show sold out or not, but I will say the place a lot of people, not all of whom were members of the old fogies club, you know like the late 30s early 40s! It was really nice to see a great many people that were in their early 20s, singing along as if they had known some of the tunes for years. There were a lot of people dancing, getting into the music, even towards the back of the crowd, away from the heated and passionate crew towards the front of the stage. The energy was certainly there. All in all though, much too short. But then again, he could play his entire catalog, and I would still think the show too short. Since I had some scheduling conflicts, I did not make it to the pre show, so I did not have the chance to hook up with any other fans before the show. I had taken my friend Jenny, who I met in '97, and has since become a true Fan of Gary herself, with the '98 Chicago show being her first concert ever! My brother was also in attendance, and states that he really enjoyed the show, despite the fact that he did not know any of the new songs. I think it says a lot about an artist, that can pull someone in, and touch them with their music, even when the material is unfamiliar. I did talk to Ben and Val, as well as Jim Napier briefly after the show while waiting for Gary to leave the theater. His departure was delayed quite a bit, as they stated he was giving interviews. I do not know who they were for, but I hope they get him some good press. Again, a wide array of people were waiting, one guy dressed in a gray suit, who I thought might have been a preacher at first, ended up having a Blue Vinyl Tubway Army LP for Gary to sign. There were the young goths, and joe averages, the obvious Numan fans, and some VERY good looking women close to my age, say 35 that I would love to have talked to! BUT, I do not think Jenny would have liked that much! LOL Well, I have had about 4 hours of sleep, and I am getting ready to head into Chicago tonight for the show there at the House of Blues. This is a much higher profile venue, and I am glad to see Gary playing several of them on this tour. For those attending, I hope to see you there tonight, and to everyone else, I will write again when I return on Monday. The venue itself, for those that care is a very old(somewhat rundown) building, and was at one time some type of theater or Ball Room. The floor is laid out in three sections, when you first walk in you are on street level, this is where the main bar is, take 4 steps down, a small seating area, for those that wish to sit, drink, and take in the show from behind the sound man, and where the T-shirt vending takes place. 5 more steps down, and you are standing on the main floor, which BTW, probably has not seen a mop and water in 5 or 6 years! LOL Although the building is a bit quirky, it has had MANY very nice acts go through it over the years. It is a college campus based club, and with affordable tickets and easy access to beer for the under 21s, many students at the University of Cincinnati are treated to a wealth of bands, many of which never play Indianapolis, a mere 1 hour and 45 minutes away(but which would only be 30 minute from me! argh). For all of Bogarts shortcomings, I applaud them for still being a venue that caters to the "alternative" music scene. For more info, and to see some of the other acts that play there, like psychedelic furs, Henry Rollins, Might Mighty Boss Tones, and so on, see www.bogarts.com Back on the road!
