Tickets $18.50 plus handling charges Hotel $140.00 X 2 Gas to get there $60 parking $19 (no, that is NOT a typo)(NOT counting the cost of the CD and video stollen while paying for this) that chance to see your favorite artist in a venue that could have been built just for him Absolutely brilliant! er I mean priceless! It is Monday evening, and I am just getting home, so bare with my random scattered thought process. Gary can flat out captivate a crowd. He has the charisma, the strange charm, the ability to draw you in, and hold you there. He is enigmatic, and alluring. He may not have thought he was good on stage when he started, but that is all history now. The way he commands a stage now, I would love to see what he could do with a stage sporting sets like he did in the early 80s! A friend of mine from college back in the late 80s, met up with me and Jenny to see the concert. He is a music fan, and has known for years my like of Numan, but this was his first time to attend a Numan concert. He was soo impressed, that when the show was over, he skipped a party he was supposed to go to, so he could meet Gary with the rest of us to shake his hand and tell Gary himself how much he liked the show! That is influence my friends, and Gary has it. The House Of Blues Chicago was a perfect place for Numan to play. Since he is using house lights and sound systems as he goes, it only tends to reason that the venues with top notch equipment are going to offer top notch results befitting a true star! Let's face it, Numan could play a small club with 4 lights, and it would be great to see him, but I am saying this show was epic! The lights were spectacular, even without a stage set. There were loads of color washes and lights were well synched with the music. They were not sparse, and they were not out of place. The sound, well, I do not think I could have asked for much more! Even the two opening acts had good sound, so I was prepped t hear Numan with perfect sound. Well, his first song, scared me. I do not think they had the mic turned up to the proper levels when he started to sing, but that was soon remedied. He voice was very clean and clear probably 95% of the time, which is a good average for a live show with screaming fans. To be blunt, I feel sorry for anyone that does not get to see Gary in one of his House Of Blues gigs. I only hope that many of the other theaters offers such a good setting. The floor area was not very deep, BUT, there was a very large bar area behind the sound board, that still had a VERY clear view of the stage, and then there was the two tiers of balconies, all with a good view of the stage. This is one of the few places, that no matter where you set, you have a good seat. Keep in mind, House Of Blues theaters, unlike many other venues, were purpose built just for music concerts, and it shows! The set was the same as the previous shows he has done so far, and again, I really liked the song choices. The people there, and there were LOTS of people, really seemed to know the new stuff as well. Many different typed of people as well. The show was not sold out before it started, but MANY people were buying their tickets at the door. I would not be surprised if the show was indeed sold out in the end. The pre show had a GREAT turnout as well. Jim Napa gave out some very nice freebies, and I brought along an unworn scarf from the Warriors tour as a give away. I hope everyone liked what they won. It was very nice meeting everyone that I had not meet before, and great to see some faces I had not seen since the '98 gig. Craig Stenseth, Brad and Sue LaVoise, Ben and Val, Jim Napier, Rick and his brother, and many others. There must have been over 20 people all told, then there were the others that came in to eat before the show that were not with us, but were there for Numan! A GREAT turnout. At the dinner, one highlight for me, was when some girl at the table behind us asked Jim Napier if he thought Gary would mind her speaking to her for a few moments. Jim laughed, and told her that I was not Gary! LOL Oh well, I told him he should have told her sure, then set up an after dinner meeting! LOL (I do not attempt to look or dress like Gary, but I am about the same build, and hair color etc.) At the end of this great performance, we all gathered outside to meet Gary. The only thing is, there was no bus! You see, on one side of the venue is the river, then on two sides are busy streets, and the the fourth side is a hotel! There is no ground level backstage door! I was on a mission. The tour bus was found underground, below the venue! Considering that, there was still a very good number of people that worked there way down there by the time Gary came out. As for meeting Gary, I have to tell you, he is so sincere. I do not gush or anything like that, I just shook his hand and told him that the show was dead on, he put on a great performance, and that the sound was nearly perfect, and so were the lights. I then thanked him for the fact that he even toured the US at all, as I know it is not an easy thing for him to do. He did more than say thanks, he went on to talk about how if he could just get up one more level, you know just knock it up a bit, then he could come here more often, which he would definitely like to do. Open up his market here. To end for tonight, not everyone may know it yet, but Numan, now just as ever, is a Star. If he never reaches that status in the public eye again, it is not because he does not deserve it. Well, I am dead tired, and staring to blur thoughts together, so I bid you all good _____ (night/day/morning-choose one) Numanally yours, Mark Hubbard PS: One bad thing, things cost SOOOO much to see a show in downtown Chicago. THAT I could do without! It was great to meet up with Brad, Sue, Jim Napier, Mark Hubbard and all the rest of the Numan faithful. Steve Harris signed my Dark Light C.D. single and mentioned to me that this was the best crowd of the tour so far!! Way to go Chicago!! My twin brother flew in to the windy city with me as it was his first Numan show. He was not disappointed!! Steve punched Gary then Gary tackled him in front of the Big G. I'm glad both got up. What a shot in the abdomen!! Song list was the same. Grand Theft Audio played the crowd pretty good and got some cheers & respect. Gwenmars-O.K. but very nice & professional. I tried to buy a tour shirt but the man selling them said that 1 medium was left and that all 850 were gone!! For the show or for the tour so far????? Hell I don't know but maybe 25% of the crowd had the PURE tour shits on. Any body else know?? The morning after I was talking to a lady that worked at the H. O. B. and she said that Gary didn't sell out but thought that there were 1200 or 1300 people there. Who can complain?? Thanks to Jim Napier for the C.D. !! I tend to like "Numanoid" better. All we have to do is convince GARY to write and name a song Numanoid" and we all would be happy. Did 4 shows, Royal Oak, MI - Cleveland - Cincinnati - Chicago... will post reviews later. The ghosts of concertia past listen through the noise, noise as the Numan band first appear through a smoke swirled wind into San Francisco's Fillmore where the specter of the Hendrix and the Morrison once played to the gathering during the age of rebellion. The entourage of the Purified will make their way back to the once lost, nearly forgotten home of the then tax exiled Numan, Sunset Strip in the city of the dark angels, haunted by Bogart and Monroe, a million shadows on the factory walls of the Blues House will greet the threads of life who will sway to the real illusion of sound. When the sun goes down the Shadowman will trapse into the land where the shadowy form of Balboa sailed through eternity to stand on the shfting sands of Mission Bay and the glistening sea of St. James known to the Spaniards as Diego Del Coronado, his silhoutte can still be seen each midnight on the first Sunday in May somewhere near he will slither fourth and Be. The final quadra performa of the Purifia Califia will be across the clear blue sky of tomorrowland and someone waving through Fantasia a visionary named Walter, high preist of D'land, unholy site of the final purification of the tour purifia. If you catch a glimpse of someone out of the corner of your eye in hooded black scathe somewhere on the California four, wait for the foggy days to clear, you may for a moment recall your forgotten years. I'll see you all there in SF, LA, SD and D'Land. Johnq Et.
