It's about an hour long, and takes the form of a documentary about the Radial Pair, which were Gary Numan and (the now-late) Norman Lees. If you're at all interested in Gary's career flying display aircraft, you really want this video. If you're not, then don't buy it for the music - there isn't much here and it's usually played underneath speech. The music has much in common with both "Human" and "Machine & Soul" (the good bits of the latter). / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / "I own more shotguns than I need. It's not funny and it's not meant to be funny - it fairly-accurately describes a very particular type of Numan "fan". The term was coined by somebody in our group (George Ellis, Riana Pfefferkorn, or possibly even myself - my memory on that is kinda fuzzy) after the San Francisco gig in 1998, in reference to a bunch of assholes wearing white Tubeway Army shirts who arrived at the show late and, after it had begun, "moshed" their way forward until they had almost all of the front-row positions. In so doing, they managed to assault a lot of people, including Riana's mother who got an elbow to the head (intentionally). I damned near punched one of them out, but we managed to keep our position so I let it go. These shitheads thought they were cool. Well, you ain't cool, you're fuckin' chilly... and chilly ain't never been cool. / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / "My best advice to anyone who want to raise a happy, mentally healthy / child is: keep him or her as far away from a church as you can." / --Frank Zappa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 21:25:53 -0700 From: Mark Subject: Supporting acts Just a thought here folks. Many people have differing oppinions as to opening acts. Some folks think they suck, others like them etc. A point to consider tho is this. It would be VERY difficult to be the opening act for anyone, expecially an act that has a devoted following. Lets face it, we are not there to see the opening act! So, we are impatient, we do not know there music, and quite frankly want them to hurry it along. I will say that on the pure tour, both bands did seem to find a way to make it through their set without getting booed off the stage, which has happened many times before at Numan gigs. Again, I would hate to be in those shoes. On the other hand, it does open them up to new audiences. Grand Theft Audio, althought I do not care for that rap/rock style at all, did indeed seem to be having a very good time. They interacted well with the audience etc.. I would say they may have sold some CDs and gained som intrance into the US market. Gwenmars, much the same thing, only they did not seem to work with the audience the same, their music was, in my opinion, a bit more of a fit. Although, I must say I would much rather have looked at the girl that they had in Switchblade Symphony in 98! Who are these people? It maybe a comedy tag, >but you know, some people don't find this kind of association funny. It was the name that was given to a group of fans who attended both the SF and LA shows in 98. The group were clean cut, mostly blond haired (dare I say Aryan?), preppy types, wearing white shirts whose behavior ruined the show for many people. These louts (both male and female) pushed and shoved their way to the front during the shows, and didn't care one bit about other fans, including the shorter people who had politely made their way to the front so they could see. The Numanazis pogoed and jumped up and down despite crowd being tightly packed and there being no room for this without irritating or abrading others. They didn't know any of the more recent material and only sang/pushed/shoved to the old stuff so I don't even think they were long term fans. This happened at both shows. I stayed back in LA to keep out of the fray. Sadly, I found out they came from San Diego. But they must have graduated because they weren't there at Sunday's show. Using the word Nazi is very strong, and perhaps not justified, but the phrase was coined at the time, had a ring to it, and delivered the negative image we had of these people - am I right Joey, Riana, Russ, Kathryn, Jim, Brian, Laura, John? Good to see some of you again Sunday. Derek San Diego, CA ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 23:57:17 -0700 (PDT) From: "J. Mark Stanton" Subject: What's NumaNazi? I believe that term made it's appearance on the last tour, on the west coast of the USA. A bunch of inconsiderate thugs basically... 'enjoying' themselves at everyone elses expense (and pain). They all seemed to wear the same uniform... a white t-shirt with the tubeway army 'face' design (and the telekon bars too, i think). Lister victims of these lamers include Riana, Riana's Mom, Lisa, and (i think it was) Jim Napier(?) who courageously protected the former by becoming a human shield for their pummellings. Thankfully we don't have an extreme far right contingent then. And thankfully we don't have to bring politics into the Numan arena. As you may recall from the 80's, and as Gary himself would confirm.... politics and Numan just dont mix. It was so loud I couldn't hear myself scream. For awhile there I thought I had mistakenly made my way into an XFL game. Numanazi was a phrase coined by Riana Pfefferkorn during the Exile tour in 1998, this refers to a group of white shirted Tubeway Army logo radicals from San Diego who violently push and shove everyone near them around, they try to make their way to the front of the stage by doing mosh type dancing. I don't know why they choose to go berserk in SF at The Fillmore instead of their own home turf but it lends to complete chaos. I was front and center when GN hit the stage, there was a wave of humanity surging forward which really put the squeeze on those of us at the front. I experienced a similar human wave forward on the last show of the Metal Rhythm Tour in 1988. Anyways, I was able to make it to the very last song of the show, that's when one of them reached around my upper torso and pulled me back into their mosh circle. Luckily I was able to maintain my balance after doing a 360 degree turn and managed to duck and cover my out of it straight into the endzone for six points. Regardless, the SF show at the Fillmore was louder than a SF 49ers or Demons game it seemed. The only thing missing was Jesse Ventura doing play by play. Of the four shows I attended, SF, LA, SD and Anaheim, SF and Anaheim were my favorites. All in all a brilliant experience.
