This band apparently has 5 different members with 5 different personalities, and in this latest video decided to mix 5 different styles into this video. One of these guys was standing in an 80s style electronic light-bar pyramid with 4 band members toting gui-boards lined up outside the pyramid. Ring any bells??? (Cars video). Afterwards, the band pokes fun at this "style", and then the "style" switches to 5 girlish scooter-cycles and beach blanket bingo.....and that's NOT weird? Hey, it's still a Numan reference to me! Oh well, thought it was interesting. I wouldn't get it. The mixes are good though. I have a copy of the pleasure principle demos if anyone wants to trade. John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 01:06:52 -0500 From: "Val & Ben Iglar-Mobley" Subject: the first rule is Dear all, I can't remember, I think it was Mark Hubbard, who dubbed 'Replicas,' 'Pleasure Principle,' and 'Telekon' "the trinity" of Gary albums. Linda Astrup has followed on from that and appellated 'Sacrifice,' 'Exile,' and 'Pure' as "the new trinity" of Gary albums. She says they're equally important to who Gary is. There was a movie that illuminated what "the trinity" were about. Moody, futuristic, infatuated with technology, atmospheric, blurring the lines between man and machine, revolving around the human/machine replicants, forcing us to ask what it means to be human, how we remain human in the face of dehumanizing technology. You know the one: Blade Runner. I've always thought that film bore more significance to Gary fandom than just that it was Gary's favorite film. Blade Runner IS what those early albums were about, albeit expressed in the language of film rather than song. All those qualities apply just as well to those albums. I think there's another film that illuminates the themes of this second trinity equally successfully as Blade Runner did those other. This one is dark, grim, almost nihilistic, voices a lost faith, searches for something to believe in, is more than a little irreverent and controversial, is defiant of god, offers a new voice for the fallen to follow. All these qualities, again, could describe the new trinity as well as the film I think illuminates them so well. None other than 'Fight Club.' Consider: the central theme of this new trinity is defiance and rejection of god, and to quote from 'Fight Club': "You've got to consider the possibility that god doesn't like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. It's not the worst thing that could happen. We don't need him. Fuck damnation, man! Fuck redemption! We are gods unwanted children? So be it!" The New Animal has been heralding a new messianic voice. 'Fight Club' offers the same in the person of Tyler Durden: "You are not your job. You are not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet... It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." Is 'Fight Club' graphic? Yes it is. It turned off a lot of critics for its brutal depiction of violence. And in a similar way the New Animal's blasphemy spurred a lot of passionate criticism among his fans. Just as graphic, in a different vein. There's another connection as well, but I don't want to point it out here so as to save a plot point for anyone on this list who hasn't seen the movie yet. Feel free to write me individually if you have. So what do others think of this idea? Does anyone know if Gary has seen this film or what he thinks of it? I'm not just blowing smoke here, either. I honestly believe 'Fight Club' is to the New Animal what 'Blade Runner' was to The Machman. love, bruised and bloody, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * Thought I saw a dance Strange and cruel Swaying to the screams of men ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 06:37:44 -0500 From: Jeff Tolva Subject: Cars bootleg on E-bay Fellow Numanoids, From the previous post: "A must for every Gary Numan collector is this 5 track CD featuring 5 previously unavailable mixes of 'Cars' direct from the 1979 mixing sessions. Track listing is as follows: 1. Cars (lead vocal mix) (1.33) 2. Cars (lead vocal plus bass & keyboards mix) (3.50) 3. Cars (Instrumental Mix # 1) (4.16) 4. Cars (Instrumental Mix # 2) (4.23) 5. Cars (Vocal dub mix) (4.24). All of these tracks have been remastered and sound quality is very good." I'm fairly certain that these tracks are the versions of "Cars" which came from the bootleg known as "The Pleasure Principles Outtakes". I happen to have the entire Outtakes session on tape myself, but it appears that someone has gone ahead and pressed just the "Cars" portion of it. The entire Outtakes session includes 11 versions of Tracks, 3 versions of Observer, 1 version of Conversation, and 5 versions of Cars. Someone had included 4 lives versions of "My Shadow In Vain" on my tape copy, but those live versions are outtakes from the Berserker tour (i.e. soundcheck versions). It looks like they've created nice artwork for this "Cars" bootleg as well. That's my take on it anyway...
