It's just you. ;-p Dryad, who recommends both book and film (the film is pretty close to the book, and very well done) -- "And we are scatterlings of Africa On a journey to the stars" Juluka - 'Scatterlings' ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 11:19:36 -0400 From: "Mark Reinertson" Subject: Faith-gullible ...and your comments about faith. you asked how "anyone ...could be so gullable?" you miss the entire meaning of ...the word 'faith.' the literal definition of the word ...is "belief that is not based on proof." that, my ...friend, is what faith is. You miss the entire meaning of the word gullible. Gullible is believeing in what someone else tells you is right with no proof whatsoever of it. Easily tricked because of being too trusting. By your definition, faith is a very bad inagination gone terribly wrong. And thank you, VinceH for making me feel that I am not the only person in the UK who blinked and missed this one. I presume that William Wilson's contribution refers to something in the film, but, in case you're being serious, William, I won't talk about Fight Club. Oh, I asked some people at work today, and two people said yes, they had seen it, and it was good. Pause for effect' is brilliantly clever. 'They could give us a war just to keep us amused.' Too right, they could if they wanted. Luckily, the world is changing and 'they' don't think like that so much now. Almost any line from I Dream Of Wires: 'So I Press C for Comfort' 'We went to sleep by dialling o' 'We drove to work by proxy' 'I plugged my wife in just for show' 'Passengers with a ticket to burn', although again, you have to know what the song is about.... Death! Death! Until the sun cries morning." The quiet intent of the delivery, the violence of the repeated "Death" chant and the poetic expression of daybreak give me chills every time I hear it. As for people of faith being gullible: I'm just your average fence-sitter so maybe I have no place to comment, but I do like to ponder on such things (usually when I'm tanked up on Guinness). I like the sentiment expressed in The Exorcist, that evil is the Devil's way of making us despair and doubt the possibility of there being a God, and if their was one that it could never love us anyway. Recently, when a bus-load of pilgrims crashed on the way back from Lourdes, the general consensus was "Didn't them much bloody good did it?". Maybe so, but take the earlier idea into consideration. It's worth a drunken debate anyway.
