I finally got to see Tomb Raider today. Towards the end of the movie, this song plays and I KNOW it's a Numan sample - NO DOUBT! So I stay through the credits and... sure enough, Numan is even listed in the credits! How cool is that? -- Troy L. I think... uhhh... my third post in the 4 or 5 years I have been reading all of your posts. Hello to the tiny handful of you that I have corresponded with or met at shows. I saw this film (A.I.) last night and although I hadn't heard in advance that there was a scene such as this one, I thought of Down in the Park immediately! Killing the mechas (mechanical as opposed the the "orgas"~ Organics) in an arena for sport... who'da thunk it? Speilberg honored Kubrick... definately a Kubrick feel to it. Great performance by young Haley Joel Osment. I give the film a 7 or 8. It had a weak ending in my oppinion. I have some neat GN stuff that I'm finally ready to part with and probably a disadvantage of not posting more often is that you folks have no idea who I am and there isn't any reason to trust that I am who I say... anyways... here's the stuff... most is readily available on CD, but I have original packaging and inserts and everything so it may be of interest to some of you: "Praying to the Aliens" autobiography hardback. I tried to get an autograph at the Anaheim House of Blues show last spring, but the bus was in a secure area. I got his autograph the night before on my Pleasure Principle disc. The book is a good read and it's in excellent condition.. no tears or dogears... "Berserker" video... The track listing is entirely incorrect, but he is in the white makeup and there is a really cool black light thing he does with a skeleton suit on during "The Iceman Comes". It says that it was recorded at Hammersmith Odeon Dec 11, 1984. It's got John Webb, Chris Payne, RRussell Bell, Andy Coughlan, Karen Taylor (looking entirely out of place way up on a platform above the drums) and Cedric Sharpley on the drums chewing gum as if he would die if he didn't. "Exhibition" Double CD... nothing on here that isn't available elsewhere I think, there is a live version of Everyday I die that I haven't seen anywhere else... he sings the Everyday I die part an octave down and he almost doesn't get it, but it WORKS! I love it! 18 songs on each disc. "Heart" CD single. Great song... also includes "Icehouse" and "Tread Careful" "Miracles" 45rpm vinyl single. Flipside is "The Fear" The cover has a picture of the incredibly hot supermodel he was dating at the time... I'm sorry I don't remember her name. He is wearing a white tux with a red bowtie. No tears, but one corner of the jacket is dogeared. "Call out the Dogs" 45rpm vinyl single. Flipside is "This Ship comes Apart" The cover is him in his white tux probably from the same photo shoot as in the last item I listed. Cover is not torn or anything but one corner is dogeared (it was stored with the other one) "I still remember/Puppets" Picture disc for Charity. Both great songs in my oppinion... a pic of a german sheppard dog on one side with the note about proceeds going to RSPCA and the flip side is a pic of GN all in leather sitting on a milk crate holding a pair of raybans... "I Can't stop/Faces" Picture disc. Closeup on one side with all of the printing and info and a full size pic on the other... he is wearing a black tux and white shirt and black tie in both pics. "Cars" 12" vinyl 33rpm "E" Reg extended mix... flip side has Are Friends Electric?, We are Glass and I Die: You die~ US version. It lists the '87 Tourdates. "Tubeway Army" The wonderful first album... 33rpm vinyl. All lyrics printed on inside jacket. "Metal Rhythm" This was the US version of the "New Anger" Album. Cool artwork all lyrics printed on inside sleeve. "The Fury" 33rpm vinyl album. So-so artwork, but lyrics are printed inside. "New thing from Londontown" Sharpe/Numan 12" Single... flipside has "Time to Die" He is back to bleach blonde in these photos on front and back. "Numan/Tubeway Army" 1978-1979 Volume Two. It's basically a 12" Single of "We have a Technical" Flipside is "Fadeout 1930, The Crazies, and Only a Downstat" These songs ended up on "The Plan" later. "Radio Heart Featuring Gary Numan" 12" Single 33rpm... Extended mix on one side and Instrumental version on the flipside. "Kraftewerk Tour De France" 12" SIngle. Extended mix on one side and two shorter remixes on the flipside, but mostly it seems just edited to shorter versions. "Living Ornaments 79 and 80" Double album... All of the original packaging is here including the coupons for the fanclub/merch/T-shirt ordering also there is a fold out page with some photos and a list of tourdates from that time period. It is sort of like a boxed set, two albums inside. I only played this once back in 1980 when I bought it and unfortunately "Airlane" (track one side one album one) has a scratch in it... DAMN... I was just a kid and I couldn't afford another and that was the only copy that made it to Winslow Arizona... (I'm in Southern CA now) "Urgh A music war" CD Two GN tracks on this... also Devo, Police, Go-Gos, Steel Pulse etc... Everything is in fine condition with the exceptions that I listed. I'll be glad to scan pics and send any of you catalogue numbers and such... just e-mail me. I'm not looking to get rich- just make it worth our time. I'm an incredibly easy going guy and I just think some of you may like to have this stuff more than me. Your brother in Gary Numan... Definitely good though. I recommend anyone who has the time and money to check it out. There are lots of show stealers in this movie. One specifically being Jude Law. His character is very interesting. As far as Down In The Park being in the movie....I suppose there were situations where the song could have came into play. I don't particularly remember the music as a main highlight. Reason being is probably because it wasn't. So just a review for those that are curious about the movie. I also think there are a lot of good lines on Slowcar to China: 'She forgets who we are', etc.... (A bit different from most 'love' songs) And what about: 'I was a passion that passed her spare time' Isn't that just an AMAZING line??? The man's a genius... My CD came within a cardboard sleeve with the same "light bulb" cover art. It does seem much like a marketing ploy to release the CD under the name that they did. Especially since Tubeway Army had nothing at all to do with the release and Gary Numan only appears on "Love Needs No Disguise". And no where on the CD release does it even mention the words "For Future Reference". Oh well... The Chicago Tribune does, however, have an online archive of its articles and as I was searching through it I did find this review back from the 'Exile' tour. Gina McIntyre? Does that name mean anything to anyone? From the way she writes about it, she's definitely a fan. Sounds like she belongs on this list. So are Gwenmars the bastard love-children of Jesus Jones and Echo & The Bunnymen or what? I finally picked up the 'Pure - tour edition' and I love it. Let me recommend it to anyone else who was holding out. I was leery of the remixes, because they so rarely deserve the title these days. More often, they're just djs mucking around with a dance track with lifted vocals (sometimes quite badly) spliced in. Here the music is about half new, half the original, but to my thinking if a dj is going to create something new for a song, it should at least have the same FEEL. These do. They're terrific. Now if only we could get them played in a club somewhere... The lives are fantastic as well, but you'd know that from seeing the shows. This version of "Pure" is probably the best of any-- album, demo or whatnot. And something tells me this is the most we're going to get of a live album for a while. Any bets on whether he's going to do a 'Pure - extended'? Yeah, I don't think so, either. love, remixed and played live, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley P.S. "Oddly erotic"? Anyone else get that from that song? * * * TOURING AGAIN, NUMAN SOUNDS LIKE A NEW MAN May 14, 1998 Gina McIntyre Now that the '80s revival is in full bloom, perhaps it makes sense that electro-pop forefather Gary Numan has decided to tour the United States for the first time in 10 years. But any mainstream music fan who attended Numan's Monday night concert at the Metro expecting to hear a note-by-note re-creation of the breakthrough single "Cars" was in for something altogether different -- and wonderful. When Numan and his band played the hit early in the set, there was no trace of the song's mechanical take on synth-pop. Instead, on that hit and throughout the set, Numan delivered expertly crafted, updated versions of his groundbreaking electronic sound, and in doing so, made the concert an enthralling, emotionally charged experience. The performance was seamless from the moment the five-piece band took the stage in a flurry of red and white lights. On both old and new material, the band created an uncompromising wall of sound driven by multiple guitars and laced with Numan's distinctive keyboard style (Numan, however, left keyboard duties to a bandmate). The dynamic "Dominion Day," the opening track on Numan's latest release, "Exile," set the standard for the night with its intoxicating blend of danceable power chords and edgy vocals. "Cars" was an early surprise but a welcome one, with its cold, hollow sound replaced with a fuller, guitar-embellished finish, effectively updating the somewhat time-worn song. The 15-song set possessed a stirring quality, particularly on the oddly erotic "Dark" and the confessional "Absolution." Without question, however, "Down in the Park" was the evening's standout, its melancholy, haunting majesty sweeping through the club with a bittersweet melody that echoed Numan's rueful vocals. Ending on a livelier note, Numan and company closed with "Are 'Friends' Electric?" one of the most upbeat (and '80s-sounding) offerings of the night. Numan himself, looking like a dapper cyberpunk in black brocade coat, patent leather boots and a tousled head of blue-black hair, was surprisingly animated, strutting across the stage, throwing the audience cool looks and thrashing his head forward in time to the insistent beat. Despite his cagey on-stage demeanor, Numan clearly enjoyed the concert as much as his audience did. Opening act Switchblade Symphony offered an equally engaging 45-minute set, filled with nightmarish nursery rhymes and tempting vocals supplied by Tina Root, whose operatic cooing and earthy intonations were delivered with equal aplomb over a richly layered musical backdrop. ------------------------------ End numan@garynumanfan.nu Digest [07/01/2001 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, datta@cs.uwp.edu, Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: numan@GaryNumanFan.NU If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL numan@garynumanfan.nu or DIGEST numan@garynumanfan.nu ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
