Jim "The Machman" Napier electronically beaming myself via cables and wires into your homes worldwide! This forum is interesting enough to read about Numan, but now with the video topics, you've hit on my other hobby. To clarify the questions: 1) The video 'The Touring Principle' featured that weird line on one edge of the screen. This was an ancient anti-piracy method utilized on several purchased home videos of the day. If you copy them on another VCR, there will be a one inch line in the middle of the screen on the taped copy which will be skewered. But this method was abandoned because, as you've noticed, they can be finicky to play. I keep the heads squeaky clean, so I've had no problems playing it, even on my low end VCRs. 2) With decent software (often those that come with your capture card will suffice) and the right settings, clean digital conversions can be made from PAL to NTSC and vice versa. It's a far cry from the days I had to ship my UK video to Texas to get converted costing hundreds of dollars. 3) About DVD's, I'm presently authoring DVD's of all Numan's TV appearances from 1978-1999 and concert videos (for restoration purposes only) as tapes degrade over time. I've had most of these tapes since 1987 and I think I'm catching them just before the effects of time, wear and magnetism have their way with them. I'm using PAL and not NTSC. PAL features only 25 frames per second compared with NTSC's 29.97 fps, but with the higher resolution and clarity, PAL is the accepted winner. Besides, the latest models of DVD players will play any kind of DVD you care to throw at it (an especial plug to the Pioneer DV-343 which kicks ass). 4) When Gary Numan was getting his head around the DVD authoring software, I offered my help as well as some indispensible websites which helped me get a running start (such as http://www.vcdhelp.com). By the same token, if anyone has questions about authoring their own DVD's complete with snazzy menus like the real DVD's have, don't hesitate to give me an e-buzz and I'll answer each of your queries. 5) Oh yeah, stop by the NAGNFC for the exclusive latest about a grassroots label gaining momentum by disgruntled fans who are willing to take matters into their own hands as far as Gary's promotion on this side of the big pond. Or take a gander at Numa Record's Steve Braun on a Seattle Mariners baseball card (yep it's real). Or read my illustrated 16 Pure Tour Chapters describing one man's mission to see every Numan show on the continent (and read about my run in the the law in South Dakota on Chapter 12). Take a poll, see who this month's winners are, see the new forum, hear a robot report the news, download audio ya can't buy, look at over 150 exclusive pics sent by Numanoids from Canada to Australia, gander in awe at the world's largest collection of Numan links, or chat live with Nu-buddies. 6) Or if not, I hear www.disney.com is nice too. :-) With props to the Nu-fans of the Nu-planet, Jim "The Machman" Napier NAGNFC North American Gary Numan Fan Club http://themachman.garynumanfan.nu _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ------------------------------ Date: 28 Aug 2001 12:05:14 +0100 From: Steve Webbon Subject: Beggars / DVD First thing - Gary owns the rights to all the videos (except Cars) he made = while at Beggars so any DVD release is up to him. I'm surprised that Eagle = haven't tried to release Touring Principle / Micromusic as they have a = very active DVD department. Having said that, their releases tend to be = the cheapest form of DVD which is just transferring an old video program = straight with the minimum of interactivity and few, if any, bonuses. Beggars have just finished a Cult DVD and, to do it properly, can be = expensive. Forget the TV performances as bonus footage - the TV companies = are asking around =A32500 per minute to use their footage! To do The = Touring Principle Gary would have to redub the soundtrack (the original = was mono) and also author it twice for PAL and NTSC. To do all this would = be expensive considering the sales potential so I'd imagine he's waiting = for the start up prices to come down. To make DVD's good you can't just '= bung them out'. As for Beggars resigning Gary - suffice to say, much as they appreciate = his current material, everyone has moved on from 18 years ago. It costs a = great deal to promote an artist in the competitive arena so I don't think = there are many companies who could afford to take the chance on Gary. = However, Sanctuary is an excellent suggestion, though you'd need a big fan = in a powerful position to make it work. Other comments - the artists on Random chose the songs they wanted to = cover; most of them were more influenced by the earlier material which = Beggars happened to publish at the time (it's now owned by the mega = corporation Universal) and finally... I, Assassin has been remastered but there was no room to = add anything different and the Warriors tapes have been located but I need = to find time to pick them up and see what's on them - so don't ask if = there will be anything rare yet! Any updates will be posted on the Beggars = site in a couple of months. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 13:10:13 +0100 From: "DeadHeaven" Subject: Numan on DVD This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000D_01C12FC2.C5C27160 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I was recently contacted by Steve Mallins, he wanted to know if I had = any old video footage that could be used for a possible DVD release. Not really sure why as my last one was a 1999. This one is a 2002 with all the bells and whistles. Hell, the voice command lady even repeats my commands and changes the temperature, radio station, CDS and all. Didn't help my depression. Decided to put in Asylum II and realized that I had been neglecting my old friend. Had forgotten how melodic songs like "The Aircrash Bureau" and "Please Push no more" had been the 1st time I heard Gary's music back in the day. "Glitter and Ash"...oh, "Glitter and Ash" how you move me so. Manipulating machines to touch our souls is a sublime talent that Gary possesses. How he has affected my life puts a smile on my face with a dose of maudlin everytime I listen to his music. Depression? What depression? Thank you Gary Numan, from the bottom of my heart! I'm betting that may actually have more to do with what songs the bands chose, Brian. Anyone else know differently? Of course, I'm sure Beggars weren't at all bothered by those selections. What's odd is the selection for "The Mix," which again favored the old Beggars catalog even though it was released by Cleo, who had the rights to the Numa era, at the time anyway. Uh, Cleo, you sure you don't want to feature the albums your own label is releasing? Maybe promote the sales of your reissues? Nevermind, I guess you know best. Speaking of hearing Gary in unusual places, NPR uses short instrumental bits between their news segments. You guessed it. I heard one of the 'Human' tracks there just briefly some days ago. Doesn't at all work as a plug, since no one would ever recognize it as Gary who hasn't heard the album before (namely, just us), but it's fun to speculate about the plucky numanoid at NPR who snuck that in there. I like to think it was a message of solidarity... in code. Uh, Cleo, you sure you don't want to > feature the albums your own label is releasing? Maybe promote the sales of > your reissues? >Nevermind, I guess you know best. not necessarily. I was signed on to do the artwork after the Mix tracks were already completed so I don't know as to the selection process, but obviously the BB era material is more familiar and stronger than the Numa material.... I mean, given the choice, which Gary Numan song would you cover? Cleo will never have access to the original versions of the BB material so they take what they can. The Mix was born before they had the rights to the Exile album and the Numa era material. Cleopatra figured out that if you drastically remix a track you can release it as it's own entity, similarly with cover versions (or tribute albums), a concept that has been worn well beyond it's innovation... they put out so many tribute albums it's literally become a joke... have you seen the Tribute to Ricky Martin, Tribute to Britney Spears, Tribute to Cher, Tribute to Dave Matthews, Tribute to Peter Frampton. It's embarrassing. The albums I did for Cleo (tributes to Depeche Mode, Erasure and Madonna) were among the first and I was very excited to do them, but now have been sullied by the endless stream of crass follow-ups. The Cher and Britney Spears are particularly horrifying. The performers are not even listed in the credits so what does that tell you?
