I've already said a few. Reaction here in Canada has been huge. America is our next door neighbour in a figurative sense, but the feeling right now is that they - and particularly the victims - are literally our next door neighbours. They are us, we are them. And we are as angry and outraged, and heartbroken, about this as our southern neighbours. And when the first confirmed fatalities turned out to be Canadians (Garnet "Ace" Bailey, whose sister lives here in Calgary, and Mark Bavis - both were scouts for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team), any sense of disconnect we might have had to these events quickly evaporated. They are us, we are them. As in the USA, all Canadian airports were quickly closed. US-bound international flights were diverted here, and we have hosted an estimated 30,000 travellers unable to continue their journey. Downtown Calgary on Tuesday quickly turned into a ghost town: we have a lot of high-rise office towers that are home to major oil companies, which were potential targets of further attack. Those people who remained at work didn't get much work done: everybody remained glued to their television sets and radios. Canadian airspace has just re-opened, and a few flights have taken off (only those that were grounded on Tuesday without reaching their original destinations), but it'll probably be weeks before schedules return to normal. The Canadian/American border, the longest undefended border in the world, is now patrolled by armed police, and there are 20km lineups at many border crossings. They are us, we are them. Personally, I'm hoping they get the planes moving again, as I have a friend scheduled to arrive from Germany on Sunday. But if she gets delayed, well, I won't be too upset with Air Canada. This changes everything, man, it really does. It's an act of war, declared by cowards afraid to show their faces. But I feel confident that the truth will come out, and, while I'm sorry if this sounds un-Christian, I hope that the US (along with NATO, including Canada) bombs those fuckers straight to hell. Them, and those who harbour them. As Numan might say, when religious extremists kill children, don't it make them wonder? Don't it make them question their faith? / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / You know how it is when you go to be the subject of a psychology / experiment, and nobody else shows up, and you think maybe that's part of / the experiment? I'm like that all the time. / --Steven Wright ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 23:55:22 -0700 From: Derek Langsford Subject: Total horror! Thanks William for sharing your humanity with the US as we deal with this totally ungodly act of modern-day babarism. The impacts, the explosions, the people jumping to avoid being burnt alive, the collapses, the total devastation. It brings me to tears seeing the images and thinking about what the victims must have gone through. Growing up in the UK, the USA seemed like one big movie set from across the pond. Having lived here for 16 years, this country is now very real to me. And while the images seemed to be yet another summer blockbuster disaster movie, the images were also very real. Those were real people in the planes, hanging on the outside of the towers, jumping to a more bearable death, being crushed in the implosion and collapse. One thing that makes it even more real, is that I once stood on top of one of those towers. I simply cannot comprehend that those enormous monuments to modern civil engineering are gone. It must be so much worse for those who lost family and friends yesterday. My heart aches for them. Distraught, Derek P.S. I'm sorry but, WHO GIVES A FUCK what music they use to cover US retaliation strikes. I'm astounded. Jesus Christ, aren't there more important things to ponder? You go tell the people who have lost loved ones about your great idea. That'll interest them. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 21:11:30 +0400 From: The Tik-Tok Man Subject: Bombing Theme Music Michael Tressler suggested A Question Of Faith as potential Bombing Theme Music, but there really is only one Numan song for a retaliatory strike: BOMBERS (the live Living Ornaments version) Played very, very, loud ... so that it's the last thing that (we assume) Osama Bin Laden (Bin Liner?) and his evil gang of ragheads hear before they are bombed into oblivion ... oh that sweet taste of revenge ... TTTM glued to CNN in Moscow ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 17:31:01 -0400 From: Michael Tressler Subject: Yesterday's sentiments I just wanted to echo the sentiments made by Jim and William in yesterday's posts and state that even though my post about Question of Faith being used as bombing theme music seemed to make light of Tuesday's events that was definately not the intent. I too watched in horror and disbelief as the images, both live and rerun, were broadcast. And as the hours past and I listened to the local PIttsburgh PA radio station (yes, near the county where Flight 93 went down. In fact, my family and I live in the very next county to the west of the crash, and I'd guess that Flight 93 would have flown within a mile or two over us. Scary, indeed.), those emotions of disbelief turned into a quiet anger. Deciding to take a break from all the news, I pulled out Sacrifice, knowing that the musical mood of "Question" was kind of how I was feeling at the time. That's when it hit me that the intro would be a really cool "retaliation" theme. Granted, we all hate to see it come to that--retaliation, that is. I too would ask for prayers for Americans home and abroad, and for anyone else, regardless of their home country, who will be affected by the inevitable events to come.
