In Gander, Newfoundland, there were more people on board stranded aircraft than there were in Gander itself. In other east-coast cities with stranded aircraft, people opened their homes for stranded passengers, while others were put up in arenas and other facilities. >But I have to say I don't want to see anybody bombed as a result of this >attack. > >Innocent lives have been taken. I cannot entirely agree. While certainly I don't want to see any more INNOCENT lives lost, the simple fact of the matter is that terrorism is a cancer, and that cancer must be cut out of our world. We cannot fully protect everybody every minute of every day, so we must strike at the heart of this evil. And that also means taking action against those who harbour terrorists. >I'm saddened that our society may become uglier as a result of something >ugly happening to us. I've heard there's been a few isolated incidents here as well, and on Thursday I was down at my local Safeway and saw a group of Middle-Eastern cabbies all standing outside of their taxis, huddled together for mutual protection, and being looked at with more than a little suspicion by people entering and leaving the store. Everybody's frightened. >If there are people still at large who were involved in this attack, let >them be apprehended and tried, but I don't want any missiles fired off in my >name. Thank Congress for handcuffing your president at those times. And thank them again for, this time, REMOVING those handcuffs. They've authorized him to use whatever force he deems necessary, in a 98-0 vote. >If anyone else feels similarly, you can join in an email letter-writing >campaign to urge George W. President Bush needs our support at this time. All of our lives are at risk, and this is not a time for pacifism and appeasement, doctrines that in the past have been proven again and again to not only not work, but usually to work in the opposite way intended: they bolster the opponent. Just ask Neville Chamberlain. Like it or not, we are at war. The best we can hope for is a short, quick war with a minimum of loss of life. Or else this will happen again. / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / If much of man's dabblings in the afterlife distill down into nonsense, / why does it hold so much fascination for us? The odds are declining. The anguish is so deep. I saw an interview with a manager at Cantor Fitzgerald which has lost 700 of its 1000 employees at WTC. Their offices were on floors 101, 103, 104 and 105 of Tower 1. He could not stop crying. This was a company with many British employees at WTC emphasizing this is not just a US but a worldwide tragedy. This is the worst ever terrorist attack against not only Americans, but many other nationalities. Seeing the images of people all over the world crying, bringing flowers and candles to American embassies, standing still in respectful silence, such an outpouring of shared grief, brings tears to my eyes. See http://www.geektools.com/mirror/coldleaf.org/thankyou.htm for pictures from London to Moscow, Sydney to Minsk, Helsinki to Rome, Pristina to New Zealand, East Jerusalem to Tirana, Ottawa to Dhaka, Beijing to Dresden, Seoul to Medellin. Thank you civilized citizens of the world. You thoughts and prayers are appreciated. This international brotherhood, the mutual realization that we are all victims of this outrageous atrocity should be recognized by world leaders. We should not slink back to the petty post-cold war bickering that is put into such stark perspective by this week's events. I hope our leaders are up to the challenge. Let's hope that some good news emerges soon. America is at a stand still - no air travel = no mail, no media, no television, no concert tours, no business travel - this country has virtually ground to a halt. Billions of dollars... I think what the world should do is organize a boycott of these nations - no buying or selling or trading - no attention, no media, nothing. The word is that what you are doing is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. How long do you think it would take for them to crumble. Hit them where it *really* hurts - in the pocketbook. And not a single weapon needs to be fired. If there are enough people out there willing to drive themselves and hundreds of innocent people on a plane into a 110 story tower and die in a millisecond in a gigantic explosion - what makes you think they wouldn't just *love* to set off the nuclear bombs, no matter where they are aimed. In which case, in case no one's ever explained nuclear war = radiation to you (or you've never seen Mad Max or Waterworld) there'll be nothing left to fight over. It really makes me sad that people have so much hatred.
