I think that this is a great way to promote his music. While I would love the chance to see some of these one-off NUMAN shows that he does, it doesn't really move him forward, given that almost every person there is already a fan. If anyone has seen a few of these, do you believe that he is able to attract new listeners? What actually got me thinking this was when I recently went to watch OzFest (Black Sabbath and Manson headlining). There was more than twenty bands playing, with a varied musical sound. I could easily see Numan's sound getting a warm welcome in events like these (especially as he's miles better!) Do you think this is a good idea, and should someone be pushing him in this direction? -Stuart Booth --part1_62.146cf3f5.28e12799_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have read recently a few reviews about Numan performing in festivals in Europe. This was addressed in this Digest a few days ago, and yes, messages about the Attack On America are, as of now, considered off-topic. Messages prior to today were still being allowed (and I of course participated in the thread). This situation is unique in human history and, in my opinion, called for a relaxing of the rules - most of us have been profoundly shaken by this. If pro sports can cancel games and reschedule the Super Bowl and World Series (and likely the Grey Cup as well), we felt that we could certainly allow some off-topic discussion about something that has affected each and every one of us. I think for me, the big factor in this decision is this: certainly we could all have gone to other forums to discuss this issue. But we'd be discussing it with other people, NOT with THIS group of people. We all share a unique bond, something in common, and that's our love of Gary Numan's music. I find it very interesting to hear what YOU folks have to say, because I find YOU folks interesting, full-stop. But we've reached the point where we must, as President Bush has asked, try to return to business as usual. Several days ago I proposed (and Derek agreed) that Sunday's Digest should contain the last posts on the topic. After that announcement was made, with the exception of one longish (but interesting) reply from Ben (which I'll likely respond to at some point, via email), the discussion pretty much tapered off, and there were no posts on the topic in the Monday Digest - just as we'd hoped. Thank you for making this request in a reasonable, cool-headed fashion. There was one message here yesterday on this subject that was, shall we say, a tad on the mean-spirited side. :-) Many folks felt as you did but there was only one subscription cancellation recorded during the entire time that that topic raged, and I didn't ask them their reason for cancelling. I now gratefully thank everybody for their patience, and invite you to resume your regularly scheduled discussion of all things Numan. We're seeing some talk about where Gary goes next re: finding a new label, let's keep it going! :-) / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / I got into an elevator at work and this man followed in after me... I / pushed "1" and he just stood there... I said, "Hi, where you going?" He / said, "Phoenix." So I pushed Phoenix. A few seconds later the doors / opened, two tumbleweeds blew in... We were in downtown Phoenix. I looked / at him and said, "You know, you're the kind of guy I want to hang around / with." We got into his car and drove out to his shack in the desert. / Then the phone rang. He said, "You get it." I picked it up and said, / "Hello?"... The other side said, "Is this Steven Wright?"... I said, / "Yes..." The guy said, "Hi, I'm Mr. Jones, the student loan director / from your bank. It seems you have missed your last 17 payments, and the / university you attended said that they received none of the $17,000 we / loaned you. We would just like to know what happened to the money?" I / said, "Mr. Jones, I'll give it to you straight. I gave all of the money / to my friend Slick, and with it he built a nuclear weapon... and I would / appreciate it if you never called me again." / --Steven Wright ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 20:28:40 -0500 From: Jeff Tolva Subject: Festival boots Fellow collectors, Has anyone any bootlegs from any of this years one-off festival gigs? Many people were buying CDs of the groups they saw (probably for the first time), and Newsgroups seemed to respond favourably to the new groups (some of which really were no where near as good as Numan's sound.) With attendancies approaching 20,000 in each city, this would appear a great way to get the name and sound of Numan out there. I think the benefit of festivals over being a Support, is that generally people don't give the support a listen, or if they do, it is only cursory (when I saw Sonic Youth support Pearl Jam, almost no-one watched them). In contrast, in festivals (such as OzFest, anyway), people seemed to be prepared to watch all the groups and only give dismissive reactions to the truly dreadful. I am sure that Numan's energy alone would win some of that audience over. -Stuart Booth --part1_14.1b165d04.28e1e67f_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I forgot to add in my previous message that why I specifically mentioned OzFest was that all the groups had CDs t-shirts available in one big tent. I was never really a Bowie fan, mainly because of my percieved dislike of Numan by Bowie. A silly reason, I suppose now. Anyway, I watched it because I have always rather liked some of his songs (despite the above). I was really impressed by some of the songs that I hadn't heard before. I noticed that one of the best songs was "Spaceboy", and that someone who posts on here uses the same name. Connected? Let's hope that Numan looks as good when he's in his fifties! If, like me, you really loathe those tv commercials that offer a "special" in the last sentence, you may have joined me in laughing out aloud, when, in the song "I'm Afraid of Americans" (another great one, btw) he pulls a sarcastically blithe expression and pauses to say, "but, wait...there's more". Humm. I wonder if I was the only one who thought that funny? Anyway, in the clips of Bowie live, I was really impressed by his earlier shows. I kind wished that I'd have liked Bowie at the time. But, what surprised me was when I saw the "Numan Glare". Unmistakable. He looked just like Numan. Spooky. Speaking of Spooky (a pun for the Manson fans), Bowie also had the exact same logo that Manson used on his recent tours (the black-edged white circle with red lightening in the middle). -Stuart Booth --part1_3a.1b3f278a.28e1e919_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Did anyone watch this on BBC America recently?
