Can you imagine Numan in Smash Hits now? Just a note to our friends around the world, Smash Hits was, and still is, by far the UKs biggest selling teen pop magazine. Anyway, someone mentioned a while back how good a film of Replicas might be. Well this little article, under the heading Next Years Numan, appeared in Smash Hits in 1979. I reproduce it below. GARY NUMAN is close to finishing work on his new album, Telekon. The track listing is as follows: Telekon, Remember I was Vapour (dedicated to his fans), I Die You Die (dedicated to the music press), Sleep by Windows, The Joy Circuit and A Game Called Echo. The bad news is that it is not due for release until next September under Gary's one-album-a-year contract with Beggars Banquet. We also here that Gary is planning a series of ten four-minute videos and a film version of the Replicas album. I wonder what the ten four minute videos were for, the Telekon album perhaps? And as for a Replicas film, how good would that have been? I would have loved to see even one promo in the style of the Replicas album cover, never mind a film. I always imagined it as a stage show, with a Replicas set. Because Numan was so big at the time, all of this would have been possible. I wonder why it didn't happen? Isn't it also amazing to look back that he was so prolific a writer at that time, that the record company had to hold his releases back. How times change. Par for the course though with all artists I suppose. Oh well. More of this soon if you are interested. It is the quiet season after all. Oh, before I finish, can anyone provide a review of his new motor show. Someone is recording it for me but I don't have the tape yet.
