The conversation worked its way around to my having taken a trip to England for a concert in 88, and when they asked who I had flown to the UK to see, I told them Numan of course, and they were VERY nice. They actually KNEW he had something recent out, and that he was getting good reviews! These guys were probably early 40s, and were very positive, and EVEN knew Gary was currently doing the Men and Machines show. Ah yes, it is always so refreshing to talk to british folks. Desire 14 track compilation CD from 1984-1997 now available. But you'll need to turn the volume up slightly for Whisper Of Truth & I Wonder as the recording level is noticably lower than the rest of the tracks. Same photo front and back from Isolation/ Isolate session, and sleeve notes misspelt Pure co-production duo as "Sulfer" !!! Nice selection of tracks though. Is this true? (Or just total rubbish?) Paddy Vickers ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 23:54:01 +0100 From: "Stephen Cunningham" Subject: Smash Hits Fantastic stuff Mr Perkins! Much appreciated, by me at least. I remember the "Dance" review like it was yesterday. Oh, the pride...feeling like maybe Gary had finally made the breakthrough with the press...only to release the, in my opinion, God-awful "I, Assassin" just after and go straight back to square one. Shame. Johnny Black used to turn up now and again in Q magazine; I always used to give credence to his reviews, on the strength of the "Dance" review - easily swayed! I also remember Neil Tennant working for Smash Hits. Despite agreeing in part with his review, I'd rather have the sub-standard "I, Assassin" to a top-notch PSB's LP any day. What a wanker. Thanks again Gary - keep 'em coming. All the best. Performed by Dennis Haines, I think (it's mentioned in the "Praying To The Aliens" book somewhere) who was in the band around the "Telekon" era. It is superb for sure, fitting the piano beautifully. The track can be found these days on the re-issued Telekon CD - so nice to finally get a copy of it that doesn't sound more like a bowl of Rice Crispies. Cheers, Steve. ------------------------------ End numan@garynumanfan.nu Digest [10/14/2001 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, davdat@allmusic.com, Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: numan@GaryNumanFan.NU If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE numan@garynumanfan.nu (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNumanFan.NU and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL numan@garynumanfan.nu or DIGEST numan@garynumanfan.nu ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
