They only did the numan piece because of "pop music history >101", and not because of the mans real talent. for them, numan is only a 'history piece" not a newer talent. True enough, but they did more than simply make note of his "one hit wonder" status in the US, and made it a point to comment on how influential he was. They showed clips of him now, and they were very kind to his history overall. Time and time again, people go on and on about how Numan does not get recognized on MTV etc. The simply fact is this, while I would like for him to get that recognition, it is not necesary for him to have a successful career. There are many artists, who make a decent living, putting out the music they want, and are not know to the mainstream for their current actions. Example, to most people Bob Dylan is old news. The man has nearly a 40 year career in the music biz, but how often do you see his stuff on the video channels. You will say that it is not his style, true enough again. Yet, I would be willing to bet, that not very many people on this list realize what he has done recently. Only three years ago, Dylan won 3 grammy awards! That was for the Time Out Of Mind CD as beat album of the year, best rock male vocal of the year, and another one that I can not recall off the top of my head. This also brings me to another point. People get upset with Gary at his live shows when he does not play certain tracks, or some get mad if he does. ANY artist with a long career faces that challenge. The Stones, is one of the largest bands in the world. You think they do not have the same problems when they tour. You KNOW people are wanting to hear their big hits, while the long term fans are just praying they skip Brown Sugar this time around. I am just glad to see Gary still playing gigs. I would go regardless of the track listing, as long as they were Numan tracks. My point is simply this. A work of art, does not have to be WIDELY appreciated or recognized, for it to still be a great work of art. I would like for Gary to get on MTV again, or VH1 or whatever, but if he does not, that does not mean that what he is currently doing is of any less value, or worth as a work of art. If what Gary is doing now, is what Gary WANTS to do now, and not what he thinks will get him airplay, then why does does it matter if they do not recognize him for it. Just my thoughts....anyone else? Just a thought. I have tried to play back my Living Ornaments 79 CD in-sync with my very worn out copy of The Touring Principle video, but as you can imagine, the CD player and the video player start going out of sync after a few minutes, but while they are in-sync it's a brilliant experience. ------------------------------ End digest@garynuman.info Digest [11/10/2001 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, davdat@allmusic.com, Joey@GaryNuman.Info ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: digest@garynuman.info If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNuman.info and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNuman.Info and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL digest@garynuman.info or DIGEST digest@garynuman.info ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
