"What does Gary mean in "I Dream Of Wires" when he sings: We went to sleep by dialing 'O'?" My guess is that it's prolly something simple... after all "C" was for Comfort? So I suppose, "O" could be for "OFF"? Gary could see the future when he wrote this as he accurately predicted folks would fall asleep waiting for this line to be responded to. --part1_36.1ffa2b77.29420e6c_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dear Jim, I think Gary was referring to whenever you call a consumer firm and navigate through the voice mail prompts until you reach the one in which you hear, "If you would like to speak to a customer service representative please press O." Hiya, No real significance here. It's a reference to "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (One of Gary's favourite books), where the people in the future use a machine to produce amongst other things, mood changes. eg. dial 1 for lethargy, 2 for happiness 0 for sleep S >Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 12:49:25 EST >From: JColl81871@aol.com >Subject: Numan Lyric Trivia! >Hey Everyone in Numan Cyberspace! >Jim Collins here with an interesting trivial question about one of Gary's song >lyrics. My thoughts.... this is out there but... O and sleep can both stand for orgasm, as can death (every day I die for you...)' The whole song to me is about a man whose time has past, who is trying to relive some of the glory of the old days. he is telling us of the wonders that he was able to accomplsh, and is tapping into a surrealistic sense of horror at the same time... 'I plugged my wife in, just for show' I believe Gary is speaking of the alienating and dehumanizing effects of technology... other ideas? ** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Dec 2001 18:25:50 +0000 From: "Jim CHOMA" Subject: Dark Wonders? Sorry if this has already been discussed on the digest - but I noticed this on Amazon.com UK with a release date of 28 January 2002. Any idea what this is? I thought maybe she was advertising some forthcoming celeb. concert, but no, it was Basement Jaxx performing "Where's Your Head At?" As everyone else has said, the M.E. sample is instantly recognisable. This single is number 9 in the U.K. charts this week, and once again will put Gary's name before a few people, although once again for his earlier stuff.... Didn't cause any actual damage, as for some reason the bad guys went after an IP that I don't actually use, but as a result I've had to switch to new IP's. This caused a load of problems, and for part of the day yesterday, the domain name "garynuman.info" was not resolving.
