Or promos. (PS: I buy used cds and promos all the time ;o) Anyway... > > Rod stated that Down In The Park (Columbia does have it listed as Down > In The Dark. Their mistake) is all rare versions. Does this mean the > studio tracks are remixed or different in some way and not just culled > from and identical to the original album tracks? I was mistaken - I was thinking of the 'New Dreams for Old' which does have a lot of unreleased (on cd) tracks, including the 7" versions of Dominion Day, the Skin Game, America, Berserker, Call Out the Dogs, New Anger, Absolution, My Dying Machine, New Thing From London Town, Your Fascination, I Can't Stop, I Still Remember, plus Metal 98, Down in the Park 98, Voix 98, A Question of Faith (edit), Magic (B-side of Absolution), and Tribal (quite good demo from the Fury sessions). Down in the park is a 2 CD set, the second cd being live tracks. Here is the track listing for cd1: My Breathing, A Child with the Ghost, The Skin Game, Berserker, She Cries, Time to Die, In a Glass House, Rumour, Here I Am, God Only Knows, Cold Warning, Creatures, Tricks, Empty Bed Empty Heart. Rather obscure selections for the most part... Rod Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 01:09:05 -0800 From: Rod Reynolds Subject: Fear Factory and MTV 20 DVDs Hi again. I picked up the Fear factory DVD the other day, one guess why. I've listened to the song a hundred times, but had never seen the video for 'Cars' (well, where would I see it?). Gary's in it quite a bit, actually, and he looks *quite* good. I totally love the song... 10 out of 10. It's very rare that I can even compare a cover to the original, but they've done a wonderful job all around. Not embarassing at all. The video's a real mish mash, though, 4 out of 10 - some parts are excellent (and not just the Numan parts) but other parts are unbearably cheesy. Not unlike, I suppose, the original 'Cars' video. ... but that was 21 years ago so may be forgiven. I also bought the MTV DVD that has that original 'Cars' on it, and also has a (83?) short interview clip from MTV with Gary just before the video plays. Complaining, defensive, of course. The chip on his shoulder shows quite nicely. Nice to have on DVD, though! The Fear Factory DVD's called Digital Connectivity. The sound quality is *excellent*. I have no interest in the rest of it, but it seems chock full of material. I am hopeful that one day we will have a Numan dvd so delicious. The MTV DVD is called 'MTV 20 Pop', and has mostly 80's videos from Flock of Seagulls, Naked Eyes, the Fixx, Big Country, Elvis Costello, Lionel Richie, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, etc. There are also brief interview clips before each track (though not all the artists match the videos - ie there's no Elvis Costello interview). The only one that really stands the test of time I feel is the Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now" which is a great song AND a great video, an unusual combination. The others try to be splashy and cutting edge and now they are hopelessly dated (and blurry), but Hold Me Now has a simple but great design sense to it, and still looks great. The Tears for Fears interview is good too. Although I do like their music, the Flock of Seagulls video is downright embarrasing for all concerned... tin foil over the cameras... yikes. And yet after a very long rant on the virtues and pitfalls of MP3 in Digest #2001-248 (Oct 26,2001) you also wrote: >As a musician myself, I have to agree with Gary on the Illegal use of his music. Also in Digest #2001-248 you wrote: >My name is Xavier and I have a big fan of gary's music for a long time. I remember >walking into a Salvation Army store full of used and dusty old rock albums and finding >gary's "the Pleasure Principle".Paid only $1.50 and I still have it, only now im busy >revamping the vinyl and re-mixing the music for CD quality. Which would lead me to believe you have a reasonably capable computer and the means to maintain an Internet connection from month to month. Yet you claim to be incapable by reason of money to purchase Gary's works through retail channels. The cynic in me is questioning whether you really can't afford the purchase or you simply choose not to because you can get it for free elsewhere. Frankly I couldn't care less about where you get your music, but if you're going to take a stance, try standing in one place. By your own words, your patronage of illegal MP3 downloads is a sign of your own immaturity and misunderstanding. Terrence ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 18:47:40 -0000 From: "David Dickinson" Subject: RE:in da (dog) house Dear Michael, There's nothing different, or rare, about the studio tracks on DOWN IN THE PARK (the alternative anthology), they are exactly the same as other versions readily available on PROPER albums. The only slightly rare stuff is on disc two, where some of the live tracks are from the OUTLAND tour or the ISOLATE tour (was that the club tour?). Even these have been released on other compilations, namely TIME TO DIE from Receiver records. The track CONFESSION is the rarest, but this too has appeared on the cheapo compilation STRANGE CHARM from Castle Pie. All these cheap compilations just rehash the same tracks over again, something to do with a licensing deal Gary signed (prior to EAGLE) which was apparently worded so loosely, that the tracks licensed keep getting sub licensed to other companies, with Gary helpless to stop it. By my reckoning there has been ELEVEN compilations released so far (with number twelve coming at the end of January - DARK WONDER) since this deal was signed, all using the same licensed tracks. Also, regarding the MP3's brought up by Xavier. Any real Numan fan (as you put it) would rather have, and make the effort (and sacrifice) to purchase the genuine cd's, and not bootlegs (I've nothing against bootlegs, providing you've bought the proper album as well). David. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 19:16:01 -0000 From: "antonio" Subject: mp3's Here is my opinion on the 'ethics' of downloading entire albums or even catalogues of an artists work on mp3. The argument that people download mp3 files because they can't afford the price of a CD is to me the lamest excuse. So these kids can afford a computer and internet access but not a 12.99 CD? I have Numan mp3's stored on my computer. I made them from my own CD's, which I bought from shops, so I could listen to them on my computer. I do not share these files with other people. Antonio Before you judge someone, try walking a mile in their shoes. After that, it doesn't matter - they are a mile away and you have their shoes. Anderson" Subject: Numan MP3's As a true Numan fan I understan the basic need to collect all of his catalogue. True, most of it is expensive, but when it comes right down to it, the prohibitive cost of a cd, record or tape should never be used as a license for theft. Downloading an MP3, on illegitamate sites, is the equivalent of taking a cd right off the shelf. Even if the special live edition of "Exhibition" does cost 50 dollars, you still can't legally or morally take it for free. I don't mean to be preechy, because I'm not taking some moral highground at all. As Gary states on the website he's not a big seller anyway, and regardless of your differing viewpoint on the issue of MP3's, it's "not your decision to make". _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End digest@garynuman.info Digest [01/24/2002 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, davdat@allmusic.com, Joey@GaryNuman.Info ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: digest@garynuman.info If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNuman.info and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNuman.Info and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL digest@garynuman.info or DIGEST digest@garynuman.info ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
