Most cds only have one or two good songs. So I just download the good stuff from Morpheus. I will admit to ripping all of Gary's albums to listen to on my MP3 player in my car. But I won't share them out. Gary needs the business. I'm sorry, but I just don't feel sorry for bands like Metallica, Garth Brooks, or Dr Dre etc. They made plenty of money, and I will not contribute to their wealth. You should buy every CD you can from your favorite unknown band, and if they still put out good music when their famous you should continue to buy there CDs. If they don't, just download the ones you like. I've just bought an iPod, which has revolutionised music for me. It's=20 impossible to avoid raving about it - iPod can hold 100 albums' worth of=20= music (which should *just about* hold the entire Numan record=20 collection), and I now have pretty much my whole record library in=20 device I can drop in my pocket. It really is a thrill ripping all those albums into the iPod at a=20 blazingly fast rate. Uploading 'Tubeway Army', for example, took just 10=20= seconds. Incredible. But the iPod has a down side: it's also clouded irrevocably my attitudes=20= to MP3s. For example, I don't have Dance or Warriors on CD. Now, I have=20= more than one copy of each on vinyl or cassette, and no doubt have=20 several songs from each on various compilation CDs, but if I want to=20 carry the albums around with me, I'll have to go into a record shop and=20= fork out once more for another copy of the album (well, assuming=20 Warriors ever arrives on CD, of course...) This is where my views are becoming mixed. It *is* wrong in my view to=20= grab Numan albums off a peer-to-peer sharing network, but I sadly can=20 find no particular moral problem with downloading digital versions of=20 the same songs that I already have in analogue format. I feel I have=20 paid my dues, in some cases several times over. Equally, I think it's=20 wrong to criticise others for grabbing MP3s. It is, after all, a=20 question of your own personal morals. I wouldn't steal an album from a=20= shop, but I've never worried about taping a record or CD for personal=20 use. But if others are happy stealing, that's for them to live with. That said, there are other, more practical issues. Do a quick scan of=20 any Gnutella network for Numan songs, and you'll find that more than 90=20= per cent of them are versions of Cars. And if other songs are any=20 benchmark, the encoding quality is often dismal. It's hardly worth=20 spending the hours =96 and days =96 needed to build up a complete album = when=20 the result will be of hugely variable quality. So I'm going into town=20 this afternoon to buy *yet another* copy of Telekon, which is one in the=20= eye for those who said MP3s are killing music. I think I've bought more=20= CDs since my iPod arrived than at any other time in my life. What I would like to see is a more responsible attitude from the record=20= industry - and even Gary. Given that many MP3 pirates are just grabbing=20= copies of songs they already own, why not offer an 'upgrade' deal? =96=20= Say, send your vinyl LPs or cassettes - or your Numan Fan Club=20 number - pay =A35 or $5 and receive access to a downloadable MP3 album.=20= That way I'd pay my dues as I should, but I wouldn't feel quite so=20 shafted when buying a CD that costs about =A31 to produce and contains=20= exactly the same material that I already have. Thanks for passing along this welcome news, Mark I love industrial music, but not the guitar-driven variety that verges on heavy metal. I like the synth- and atmospheric-dominated style that's closer to techno or disco. To my ears, industrial should make our lungs reverberate in our chests, but to a danceable rhythm. They're not necessarily contradictory. "Atmospheric" can also mean "synthesized," and I think Gary has proven pretty conclusively that a synth can powerhouse a concert as well as any instrument can. Now, where I think he's contradicted himself is in the interview that was posted here a while back... > "It was definitely done as an experiment. Okay, just to keep this straight... he wants this next album to have more of an electronic sound, but it was a mistake for him to have done that then? If it's another "and-the-kitchen-sink" hodge-podge mish-mash of singles and b-sides in seemingly random order (as with all the Receiver recyclings), I think he'll have missed another opportunity. If, however, it's a singles-only set tracked in chronological order (and with references to their respective albums) I think that would serve him far better in pulling in some more casual listeners. If it's drawn from both the Beggars Banquet and the Numa catalogs, I suspect a lot people will give it a pass. If instead it's a follow-on companion to 'Premier Hits' I'd imagine that would be a selling-point for a lot of people who might have only that compilation in their Gary sections of their music collections. If I'd known, I would've nabbed myself a copy of that one. Any of our Brits have copies of both the Numa original and the Eagle redo? Care to compare and let us know your impressions? I think I said before I compared Rod's remaster for Cleo to the Numa original, and Rod definitely cleaned up the sound for it. One last point on the endless Sacrifices... is the sound at all different on 'Dawn'? Believe it or not, I missed that one too. I suppose there is a kind of hipster chic to being part of an obscure scene, but I don't need to keep Gary to myself, to keep him a secret, in order to enjoy his music. I went to kindergarten. I know how to share. Well, I suppose it might be a bit of a trade-off if I wasn't able to get second-row spots at his concerts any more, but I'd accept that if it meant huge success for him such that he was playing stadium amphitheaters instead of clubs and I had to settle for second balcony. I want Gary to always be making music. He's been consistent enough for me that I can confidently predict I'll always love what he creates. Being hugely successful would guarantee he'd be making music far into the future. I mean, do you enjoy Nails any less for as popular as they are, Rod? (Or is that, "as he is"? Dang, is Nails a band or a one-person act? Does anyone know?) For me, my enjoyment of a musical artist is a function of the music she or he creates, pretty much end of story. Sure we all were turned off of Bowie when he made that terrible 'Never Let Me Down,' but that was because it was such an awful album not because he had become popular. He's still one of the wealthiest, most famous musicians in the world, but the recent 'Black Tie White Noise,' 'Outside,' and 'Earthling' are all excellent albums nonetheless. > Warriors will contain an untitled, "previously unreleased track."
