I can't imagine anyone being better suited than our New Animal for providing the musical score to a story about a vampire who becomes a rock star. (Makes me wonder if Gary served as a real-life model for Anne Rice?) The score they used sounded like generic alterna-whatever, when it was supposed to be mesmerising industrial goth. Any of the 'Pure' songs would've sounded perfect for Lestat to sing. I confess I enjoyed it, anyway (after first lowering my expectations so far down I couldn't see them anymore). One of my local chain outlets was having a clearance sale, and I picked up the reiss of 'Outland' just to have the Rockers' Uptown remixes of "My World Storm" on disc (one of which was a version I didn't even have on my vinyl). I haven't heard it mentioned here, so let me just say that the accompanying essay by Steve Malins rates right alongside the ones Beggars are including with their new reissues. Actually, I appreciate the album in a whole new way now, hearing about all the ideas that went into its creation. I had an inkling of some of what he described in the text, but I could never be sure if it was my own projection into what Gary meant the album to evoke. Now I know-- he really did put a lot of thought and planning into the symbolism of the sounds and textures and rhythms he used on 'Outland.' I've always felt that was a sorely underappreciated offering among us 'noids. Reading this essay, I feel vindicated in that impression. 'Outland' is a lot more imaginative, sinister, and subversive than its been given credit for. It makes me want to pick up the reiss of 'Metal Rhythm' just to read its essay, which I'm guessing would be of equal caliber since it was packaged by the same team. I already have all its material on cd format. Does anyone have that album reiss? Can you vouch for whether that essay is worth the price of admission? Ben . . .
