I can only hope that we can convince Beggars to do this as I would then otherwise have to resort to other means of acquiring those particular tracks (which I would hate to do!). I know that previous digesters have rallied and created a poll which then became a petition which in the end effected the release of Berserker on cd (way back in the early nineties). So we can indeed make it happen. Therefore, in regard to the release of Warriors and I,Assassin on cd, please count my vote! Cheers to all, Linda Downunder ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Speak for yourself Troy - I find that attitude unhealthy*. Just because Gary does something does not automatically make it a work of art ("Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I give you six minutes of audio hell: 'I'm on Automatic', followed by the 'On Broadway' duet with Leo Sayer"). >I believe history proves that Gary works best under pressure anyway I think a case could be made to prove exactly the opposite. What pressure was Gary under when he produced 'Replicas'? Compare that to the financial desperation that drips from every semi-plagiarised chord of 'Machine & Soul'. And didn't he put out Sacrifice - perhaps his best album of the past 20 years - when pretty much everyone had given up on him? Ziggy Allen makes a similar point in making the argument that fans who comment on Gary's run-ins with technology might piss him off because he is letting us into his everyday life. I'd disagree with this on a number of fronts. First, Gary's life is hardly an open door. The posting about tech hell was his first in over a month; and if the previous entry - about his parent's caravan being nicked - goes straight to the heart of Gary's character, then I'm a little worried. But I would concede that maybe Gary should stop posting these stories about tech problems. Because it seems to me - and I confess that I have no psychology qualifications whatsoever - that he's using these as a crutch. How many times over the last few years has Gary apologised for the slow development of an album because he was rebuilding his studio or buying a new Mac? I haven't checked on NuWorld, but it might prove instructive. It's unfair to have a go at Gary for this, because he has every right to do what he wants with his life. He's in his forties and if he wants to spend the latter days of his career tweaking his new studio, shouting at his computers or sticking pins into pictures of Hear'Say, then he's earned that right. But I think it's equally valid to recognise that maybe Gaz is excusing his lack of musical focus. Remember, we've had two albums in the last *six years*. I bet his studio doesn't have 'sweatshop' written above the door. The original poster had it spot-on, and it was constructive criticism that would help Gary. A little bit more time spent strumming his guitar or jamming with the band might produce a less predictable album in the future. To be honest, if Gary really has lost a score of sound effects and loops from all his computer troubles, I could live with that. Like I said, he can what he wants to do. But surely Ziggy, we have an equal right to pass comment on the stuff he think is valid news? Tom (PS: What's with all the HTML mails?) * If I remember right, so does Gary. There was a Smash Hits (?) interview around 1984, which opened with the words "He touched me, Oh my God, he touched me!", where Gary complained that his fans were too obsessive and should listen more to other people's music. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 07:48:49 -0600 (CST) From: machman@netdirect.net Subject: Re: Digest (03/18/2002 18:01) (#2002-8) Far be it from me to try and "understand" the creative process that another artist uses, but I have to confess that I am a bit miffed by the statement that SO many things were messed up because of his reliance on the computer set up. Kinda harkins back to when he relied on something else so heavily, like the Wave sound. In his book, he stated that he relied too much on that one source for creativity. Gary should use whatever "tools" are at his disposal. However, they should be just that, tools. They should not be the only thing he relies on. In the beginning, he used the guitar and piano. Gary, your music is in you, regardless of your studio situation. Consider using an outside studio once in a while, or look at other studio layouts, that use PCs, but that do not necesarrily depend on them. That being said, I will look forward to, and buy his next release. I just hope that people do not get frustrated by his lack of new material, and the potential delays of any new music. Troy Walters responded: Get real. We like what Gary does because Gary does it. I agree, but I also tend to agree with the "band" comment as well. I think having good musicians in the studio (as apposed to drum-machining or Gary playing all the instruments) compliments Gary's own talents very well. I appreciate music much more knowing that there are three, four or five people actually playing on a record as opposed to it being the product of one person sitting at a mixing board. Call me crazy.
