And George Michael, David Bowie, The Cure, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, The > Human League, Pink Floyd etc have been SO prolific. My point is, serious, > long-term artists, are never prolific. Who released an album or two a year? Between 1962 and 1966, Brian Wilson wrote, arranged, and produced *11* Beach Boys albums, delivering a dozen top ten hits to Capitol Records... and then, on the eve of his greatest artistic triumph, his brain exploded. Gary can take as long as he likes to do his next album as far as I'm concerned. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 18:32:56 +0000 (US/Eastern) From: machman@netdirect.net Subject: don't let's start Well.......here we go again. Bickering back and forth over opinions. People, we are ALL different, and not likely to agree on much, OTHER than the fact that we like Numan. We do not even agree on WHY we like him, or waht it is about him that keeps us fans. With that said, let me just say that some healthy discussion, and even disagreement is a good thing. Just a heads up that we not turn this into a bashing session, if we could. I start this to say that I have met and like several people from this list, even tho our points of view may not match. I did make a comment about Garys studio situation myself, BUT it was NOT to bash him. I felt it was a constructive comment to say that someone/anyone should be carefull about relying on any method or system too heavily. That is not just in the music business, just anything. (the company I work for is an example. The spent a major amount of time and effort on one contract. They have now pulled taking 10% of our companies total revenues, and 25% of our client base. The old don't put all your eggs into one basket saying comes to mind.) Again, Gary himself, in his own book, made similar comments, about how he was so dependent on the Wave team etc.. Also, my only other personal feeling, and comment, is that if Gary wished to have commercial success again, he does have to be carefull about the timing. People are fickle, and he has been name checked over the past couple years, and there may be more and more people interested in what he does because of it. It is possible tho, that much of that interest could fade, if there is nothing for anyone to go out and buy or hear that is new. That is all. I am NOT saying he should rush, or even CARE if he has commercial success. I am simply saying that IF that is indeed what he wants, then he has to cater to it. That being said, if Gary wants to just make great music, and not really care if it sells or not, then great. More power to him. But, I am willing to bet that his lable will not feel that way. I want the lable to be happy as well, so THEY will in turn support HIM. Now, speaking of Labels, and other thoughts.. > > Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 20:33:03 -0600 > From: "Mark V. Perhaps I don't fully > understand the delicate process of operating a soulless music machine like > Beggar's Banquet, or maybe I'm just conspiratorial, but the label is digging > its heels in yet again with another invalid excuse... I do not think that way at all. Beggars were under no commitment to have the re-releases remastered. They have gone above and beyond with their releases. From a simple business stand point tho, you can not sink your money into something that very well stands the chance of NOT returning your money, let alone make a profit. That is all. As for them not supporting Gary many years ago, that is also the way most record lables work. New acts get the most push and financial support. Existing acts, especially those that are considered as established, do not get as much, as it is believed that they will not benefit as much from the support. True or not, that is the way it is looked at most of the time. This has been explained to me more than once by record company employees. My understanding of it may not be perfect, but Steve Webbon may be able to shine some more light on this subject. Steve!! PLEASE, at minimum, go mail order, and count me in! > ------------------------------ > > Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 22:50:38 -0500 > From: "Troy L. Not even with his so called > fans. Pathetic, really. True, He owes us nothing of the sort. But, I don't always think that someone stating their oppinion is someone bashing him. I, for one, meant no bashing at all by my comments. > I don't play well with others either, but it's simply good form to have > some degree of manners. Criticism is being made of something Gary has > not even completed yet! Do you read the things you type before you send > them? What pressure > >was Gary under when he produced 'Replicas'? > > Erem... he hd an advance from a record company and at 21 years old something > to prove? He had about a week of studio time and an album to record? Just thinking outloud, I did not think he had an advance. I thought he did not really see any money until some months after the success of his music. I thought that most was recorded so fast, as he was young, fresh, and full of ideas that more or less just oozed from his creative poors. That is just my take on it tho. He wrote the stories, and words first most of the time back then, then the music followed. Now he does music first, then story. That is just the way he does it now. >He had a millon ideas and was able only to record only about 10 songs? I thought he recorded a LOT more during those sessions, but that was all that were released. The others showed up later on other releases. > >But I would concede that maybe Gary should stop posting these stories about > tech problems. I think he is apologising for the delay in new material and > simply explaining too much to the fans because he respects us and wants to > keep us informed. I agree, I am glad Gary bothers to give us any explination. I think he just wanted to keep us posted.
