How could he miss = the top 20? He's right above Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" and T= homas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science". I guess I'm glad to see tha= t he ranks relatively high on the list. To see it, go to http://www.vh1.= com/shows/series/100_greatest/one_hit_wonders/list_40-21.jhtml. C =20 But man - that "One Hit Wonder" tag gets irritating. I guess if you're ta= lking about the United States - yeah, he was widely ignored - but ignored= by the people that force fed us Britney and the Boy Bands for the past t= hree years. Now is that good taste? =20 While payola is a taboo phrase at most radio stations, you KNOW it's goin= g on. For those of you a little green on the terminology, payola was big= in the 60's and 70's when record labels would pay (bribe) radio programm= ers and DJs to play their songs. They would turn a C - song into a hit j= ust by drilling it into the public psyche. It's illegal, but it still go= es on. I worked at a few stations over the years and believe me - the bo= neheads that set up the play lists weren't guys I'd like dictating ANYTHI= NG (let alone what music I listen to) to me. =20 Just a rant I had to get off my chest. While it's good to see a mention = of Gary in the US media, the One Hit Wonder thing is getting a bit redund= ant.
