Was anyone else looking forward to I Die You Die on last week's TOTP2, but with video at the ready, was expecting a 1980 Top Of The Pops appearance with Gary Numan (& Dramatis) !!!. I know I was!!! :-) Some of us have the Newman Numan compilation video with the video so we were familiar with it... It would've been better to see one of the original striking performances of Are Friends Electric?, but we all know that Gary wants to be known for other classics other than Are Friends Electric? & Cars, and we can't blame him... I am currently reading the Philip K. Dick book, Dr. Bloodmoney and have come across the phrases (mere pages apart): little tract houses he paused for effect I know 'I pause for effect' appears in I Die You Die, but cannot think of the song with 'little tract houses'. It is part of a 'speaky bit', but what song is it?? Its driving me crazy!! On a side note, let me offer a big thanks to this list for turning me on to PKD so many years ago. Over the past few years I have read all of the PKD books I can get my hands on. People say that once you've read Philip K. Dick, you never quite look at the world in the same way again. Actually, I think the same is true for hearing Numan's music. Thanks again, Jorja ... now go read some PKD and listen to some Numan music ... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 15:45:06 -0700 From: Rod Reynolds Subject: Re: Exposure... follow-up to 'Photograph'? > On that note, does anyone know if Gary had any say in choosing the songs for > 'Exposure'? Does this at all reflect his own choice of favorites of his > songs? > I haven't received my copy that I ordered from www.hmv.co.uk the day of issue, so I can't check the credits, but my experience with Gary would indicate that it is highly unlikely that he would be interested in such a venture. When I was doing the Cleo remasters I harassed him for months for scrapings of material and photographs, but he was not interested. I begged him to write brief liner notes for the cds (how great would that have been). His responses were brief and far between. I assumed it was because I was so far away and he wasn't taking it very seriously. I ended up taking quotes from Praying to the Aliens for the liner notes of Remodulate, which I still think is interesting. Nothing quite like hearing it from the horses mouth. Last time I talked with him, in LA at the House of Blues, I had him sign the inside cover of Remodulate, which I designed and compiled, and which he said he had never seen. He said, he quite liked it, though, which was nice. He then told me that he wasn't interested in his old material, he held up the Pure cd and said, 'even this one is old news to me - I'm already beyond it'. Brian from Cleopatra told me that he'd sent all the cds that I was working on onto Numan, yet I could never get any feedback, even while in process. Gary's response confirmed that even if he did receive them, he didn't look at them. It's a bit frustrating, because now he's campaigning to sell enough copies for chart placement of a compilation of the same material. My assumption re his interest in this project, is that there is real potential for chart placement in the UK, whereas with the Cleopatra stuff, that was never going to happen regardless of how involved he got. Still, as we all do, I wish the Cleo cds had turned out better; if Gary had taken an interest in them, they surely would have. I still love his work, to varying degrees, and will admit to having copied a few of his fashions over the years, and I will buy any and every cd that he puts out, sight unseen. (or should that be sound unheard?)
