Saw some questions about Automatic and had to put my 2p worth in. All in all, it's not a "horrible" as many will make it out to be. It does, indeed, have some synthpoppy stuff that isn't too bad. "Change Your Mind" is a decent song as is "I'm on Automatic" although as far as Numan goes, it's WAYYY watered down stuff and doesn't much hold the test of time, unlike stuff like Telekon or TPP. It's hard to find at best, especially on CD. I found the LP artwork rather interesting as it has a large "shiny" X imposed over the top of the artwork of Numan and Sharpe standing on that scaffolding in some warehouse or factory of somesort. Personally, I'll take the Sharpe/Numan stuff over the Numan/Nicholson junk any day of the week. Ta for now! Rick in DC (pricing tix to KMFDM as we speak) :) --part1_7c.29a1d94d.2a42770f_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all.... I honestly believe it is one of the best. I know people here will disagree, but of course, peoples' tastes are different. And.. good luck finding this album for 20$. I paid 45$ US for mine (approx.) last year. smu johnson > Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 16:43:12 -0500 > From: "Mark V. You're obviously into Gary and the songs, though classically eighties, are still infused with that Numanesque flavour. The lyrics are all recognisably Numan, and as for the music, if you like the typical eighties style (plenty of catchy hooks)then you've nothing to lose by buying Automatic. My personal faves include Voices, I'm On Automatic, Rip It Up (slightly reminiscent in style of M&S), however all of the songs are above average (compared to the other eighties stuff of this style). I personally listen and very much enjoy this album on a regular basis which is more than I can say of some of Gary's other stuff. Hope this helps - I'd be happy to make a taped copy for you! Cheers, Linda Downunder PS. Not sure if demographics help but I'm 23 years of age and became a fan 2 years ago. > Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 16:43:12 -0500 > From: "Mark V. Beggars have stated that there are still no release dates scheduled for these releases, they are still waiting for Gary to add some lyrics for the new songs and they believe he is working on them now. Beggars have also confirmed that the Gary Numan "Rarities" album is still a going concern. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 08:15:32 +0000 From: "Ian Blair" Subject: Automatic Well I LOVED this album, back in the day and for many years - but I aint got a turntable these days so I haven't heard it for yonks now! I'd struggle to remember if "Change Your Mind" is even on this album though? Certainly "New Thing From London Town" isn't (?). But I did love this album though - mad nonsensical Numan lyrics, strung along to some really nice, catchy, melodic synth sounds from Bill Sharpe. I gather this is quite rare to find on CD these days? I did manage to pick up the CD single for "I'm On Automatic" a few years back, which has an extended version of "Automatic", an extended remix of "Voices" (which I adore), and an extra track I'd not heard, called "Love Like A Ghost", which is just lovely! "Automatic" is not a bad album, just a bit too mainstream and 'commercial'. Sugababes have gone from 30 tot 10 in hte charts. Sorry for telegraphic style, but I do have a lot of work for the moment. Anderson Well, I enjoyed enough to justify buying it. That being said, it is not one that will more than likely find a lot of play time in your CD player when compared to his other works. The biggest thing about the album, in my opinion, is that unlike much of Numan's usual fare, this album will sound a little "dated". It is certainly an 80's album, but depending on your way of looking at it, that may or may not be a bad thing. As a whole, the album is dancy and very Pop aimed and driven. If you liked Change Your mind engough, then you may very well enjoy the rest of the album.
