I've read the last couple of digests and thought I'd throw my 2 cents in... The strangest part to me about Gary denying his past is that he still seems to promote/remake/perform "Cars" every 5 minutes. Don't get me wrong, that is NOT a bad thing, but it makes this sudden denial of his past seem like more marketing than mindwave. If I had written "Cars" or 'AFE' or almost anything he's done (even the albums that some consider "bad" have outstanding tracks on them in my humble opinion) I'd wear it like a banner til the day I die. Very strange to see Gary where he is now. I was so astounded by SACRIFICE and EXILE for the same reason I was astounded by all the early stuff: because it was so singular. Who else had that sound? All of my faves (Bolan, Golden Earring, Joan Jett, Meshell Ndegeocello, etc.) are my faves because they sound like no one else, and they do what they do well and are unafraid to venture into new territory. (OK, I admit Jett is derivitive-on-a-stick, but the USA hadn't heard much about Suzi Quatro, but anyway....) I must concede that I think PURE didn't do as well as expected because it jumped the track of no-one-else-does-this and ventured dangerously into a soundalike for about 10 other albums out at the time, Gary's voice/lyrics being the only defining factor. I liked the album very much, but felt like Gary was trying to (gasp) sound "popular" again instead of unique, which is why most of his fans love him in the first place. Add to that the fact that he is a genuinely nice guy and it's even more confusing. I definitely support the man, but I wish he'd lock himself in his room again and jump off the bandwagon that PURE flirted with. The best stuff Gary's ever done (to me at least) is the stuff that is incomparable with anything you've heard elsewhere. Whew. I'm done. Water, please. Just so you know, I Assassin was released in its entirety on the Japanese Asylum 'box set'. FAR superior to the Beggars Banquet early 80's 2Lp/1cd hatchet job. Never been there myself. Have the same fear of getting there and not knowing anyone or anything. But let me know if you're coming to LA! But HEY... I just got an email from hmv that they're out of stock on the RIP singles that I ordered, and when the back order comes in they'll send them along. How did you manage to get the last two copies???!! Grrrrr!!! Rod Los Angeles PS Joey my numan.info server says it's down (??!); I'm on Earthlink only, which is working. > > HMV.com informs me that my copies of Rip 1 and 2 are on the way.....I'm > greatly looking foward to those.......anyone heard any trax of them yet?? > thoughts? comments? amusing anecdotes? :) > > Bye for now > Rick in DC > ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 11:37:08 +0100 From: "Martin" Subject: rip Just bought the two RIP singles from Virgin in town. They only had one copy of each but this is a major breakthrough as Virgin used to be Ourprice and I can't remember the last time they had a numan single on their racks!!! Anyway the video played full screen which is great because you only normally get a small windowed video on enhanced cd's. I really liked the new version of ME and This Wreckage but not too keen on Are Friends Electric and have already got the new remix of A Prayer To The Unborn. All in all well spent money.
