After getting to No. 29 (Gary's first Top 30 appearance with a song from a current album since 1986) it is sorrily doomed to fall out of the chart because of lack of availability. What were Artful thinking? Is this some big tease? Generating interest in the Pure album benefits Eagle more than Artful, so why not ride the success of Rip as far as it can go? It just doesn't make sense. And why after slagging off other 80s artists for reliving past glories, does Gary only manage to put out reworks of his more successful 80s songs as his b-sides? Do Eagle, and now Artful have to rely on these tracks (in case the new material doesn't attract)? I still think My Jesus could have been as big as AFE if given the chance. Oh well, Derek P.S. Fingers crossed Joey for a smooth transition - thanks for letting us know. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Jul 2002 08:10:31 +0000 From: "Ian Blair" Subject: Numpet's... Hey - great to see a fellow Pethead here in Numo-world! TV yesterday I happen to be watching VH-1 Top 100 One Hit Wonders over this weekend and decided to check out their website. It had Gary Numan listed at #21 in the 4th hour. We waited and watched. (recorded) The website also had some information on the artists shown so I checked out the TV Appearances of Numan's... lo and behold the Saturday Night Live (#97) with host Elliot Gould was scheduled for the next day... last Monday (July 8, 2002). I stayed home that day to have a serviceman fix the a/c which also gave me a great opportunity to record it on digital DV tape. Great! The appointed time arrived and I waited for 23 minutes for the first song "Cars" to be performed. I then suffered thorough all the other skits and waited until the end of the show when I knew "Praying to the Aliens" was to be performed.... I was getting nervous since the 57th minute had hit and was still in commercials... the show comes back with the cast with Gary and his band all onstage saying the traditional good-byes... WHAT? only one song... seems the show was edited/shortened. BUMMER! I surfed on over to the E! (eonline.com) website customer service page and fired off this letter: -begin- "I just watched (after waiting 22 years) to see SNL #97 (Elliot Gould, host) with musician Gary Numan. I remember he played two songs on the original back on February 16, 1980. The version presented on your network on Monday, July 8, 2002 had only one song performed... ("Cars"). The other song: ("Praying to the Aliens") was cut. Not sure about all SNL skits shown. Anyway, I was extremely happy to see the show again but was rather disappointed to miss the one song that made me sit up and take interest in the artist that many years ago. I wish your editing practices were not so strict and I am asking for an explanation on why parts of the show were cut... especially the part I was interested in. Yes the skits were funny but the show also served another purpose - to showcase music live on stage with current top artists. That was why I watched the show also. Is there a way to have an unedited version purchased or shown in the future? Thank you very Much -Joe & Deana Abell Wood Dale, IL (USA)" -end- I will share this response as soon as I receive one. Oh, The DV recording is pristine! I will preserve it anyway on DVD. On closer inspection it turned out to be a Teletour programme from 1980, complete with merchandise flyer. This was something that I have never seen before, and a great addition to my collection for only two pounds. It is amusing to see that the programme notes are written by Paul Gambaccini, giving numerous reasons why he likes Gary Numan, including appearing on Top of the Pops, between Bryan Ferry and David Bowie and 'holding his own'. Fantastic stuff. Keep em' peeled my friends! Gary ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 20:12:02 +0100 From: "Gary Perkins" Subject: Anyone for a Video Swap? I know that this sort of thing is generally frowned on, but I thought it was worth a try. I have been trying to get hold of the Newman Numan and Touring Principle videos for ages now. Mainly via Ebay where they go for huge amounts of money. I wonder if anyone would be prepared to swap me a copy of one of these for a good copy of Micromusic? I only suggest this because these three titles are all out of print, and if they do go back on sale at any point, no doubt we will all be in the queue to purchase them. In actual fact I purchased both NN and TP back when they were released, but unfortunately on Betamax format. Doh! Anyway, thought I would give it a try. Let me know if you are interested.
