--part1_164.11495859.2a735249_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 20:50:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Chris Devine Subject: Five Worst It's interesting to see the diversity of opinions on best/worst here. I've seen Like a Refugee turn up a number of times on other lists besides mine, both best and worst. So I thought I'd take a crack at the list again (had to consult David Dickinson's list to refresh my memory) and come up with my 5 LEAST favorite. So here's what I've come up with, #1 being the worst: 1) My World Storm (the US single remix) *shudder* 2) I Can't Stop -- as in, I can't stop hearing the inane chorus backing vocal melody in my head ... makes me want to decapitate myself. The rest of the song is OK. 3) America -- The melody seems too contrived and stilted 4) This Wreckage -- Fantastic, bloody brilliant song, my first introduction to Gary Numan (I bought Telekon as an experiment). Dreadful choice for a single. 5) New Anger -- suffers from the same thing that bugs me about I Can't Stop: That backing vocal melody. Looking back on it, there seems to be a common thread to my objections. But I tell my friend constantly, "I'm a sucker for melody." And for better or worse, I judge the vast majority of songs on their melody. (As a side note, this is why a lot of covers of songs really bother me ... the people doing the re-recording almost never give a great melody its due [witness Sixpence NTR's 'There She Goes,' which thrashed one of the most sublime alternarock melodies into abject submission]). My World Storm, on the other hand, just plain sucked. A pox on IRS for doing it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! (UK Centre Right Daily Broadsheet). He appears again in the Play supplement. This time he is "Music Choice" for his DVD release of the Berserker tour. The article is complimentary and mentions all his lesser known tracks featured without concentrating like every other journalist on the big two hits. Numan will be pleased with this. It includes a large Telekon picture with comments including "Numan is cool again......" and ".....this robotic extravaganza is hard to beat". He seems to have a connection with this Saturday supplement as he frequently appear in the music crossword and retro chart rundowns regularly. Honest and for true. > Why don't I own it????!!!!! Because it didn't get a very wide release... and it just sneaked past you! (Note the chart position. That's right, it was a trick question; it didn't have one!) > What's the b-side for it? And here's where Gary started to get miserly. It didn't have any. At least, no b-sides in the way we'd come to expect them from Gary, as in new songs that weren't on the album. The b's were: Magic (extended mix) Magic (trick mix) B-sides. Now you see 'em. Now you don't. Like Magic! > Any releases from Outland?? Uh, yeah, you named it yourself: Heart (3/91) 43 > While Gary probably had solid reasons for picking the tracks > that he released as singles (assuming it was his choice)... Good point, Derek. Notice that I listed "Magic" as a single, even though I don't think Gary had anything to do with it being chosen for single release. I'm counting it as a possible entry because (and follow along with me here because the logic gets a bit complicated)... it was released as a single. (Go ahead and slap me for being a smart-ass.) Notice, though, the list doesn't include... > 3 Bleed ( for someone who is not in to drugs > the words are really mind bending) Speaking of being on drugs, Keith, I'm pretty dang confident that one never appeared on an a-side. I think the judges have to disqualify that one. You want to substitute another title for your list in its place? > To make this more interesting (not that it isn't) I will compile > all the Top 5 posts and make a "Digest Top 5" - so keep > sending them in (to the list!) Uh... Rod...? If you'll remember, I posted the results of the songs poll I ran here as well. I was planning on doing that again with this one. I suppose you could wrestle the poll away from me-- posts here do belong to everybody-- but it was MY idea! So, yeah, keep sending your lists in to the list! Or send 'em to Rod! Or to me!
