I don't >think Gary or we as fans should be ashamed of Cars, but embrace it as >perhaps the most enduring song of the 80's/new wave era. Amen. On my own top-five list, I ranked this song 2nd only to "Rip", which I think is his most powerful single ever - it's a song I want to play over and over. But hey, maybe five years down the road, maybe "Rip" slips down the list and leaves "Cars" in 1st place. In my opinion (and I hope I don't offend anyone), I think there's a stigma amongst Numan fans when it comes to "Cars". Being familiar with the REST of his catalogue sets us apart from casual fans and people who've only ever heard "Cars". We hear much from Gary on the subject: he doesn't want to be a nostalgia act, he wants to go forward and not live in the past, etc. Fine and dandy, I don't have a problem with that. But for some, admitting they like "Cars" is like being one of the herd, and we're all rugged individualists here. :-) This attitude, while understandable, is quite unfortunate. "Cars" is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest singles in the history of the music business, by any artist. I've never met anyone who doesn't like that song (even my Numan-hating friends, who say "OK, so he wrote ONE good song, big deal!"), with the exception of NUMAN FANS THEMSELVES. They're the ONLY ONES who I have ever heard the phrase "Cars sucks" come out of their pie-holes. Yeah, it's yesterday's news. Yeah, it came out in 1979, and now it's 2002 and Gary's output today is nothing at all like it. So? Beethoven is yesterday's news. Bach is yesterday's news. Ditto Strauss. But they wrote some AMAZING music and we still pay to hear it again and again. The people who buy these CD's aren't nostalgia buffs: they love great music, pure and simple. And "Cars" is great music, being both pure and simple. :-) (Ok, that's about as poetic as I'll ever get) So maybe when we're introducing Gary's music to someone new, and they say, "oh, isn't he that guy from the 80's who did that 'Cars' song?", instead of getting angry and saying "yeah, and about 320 OTHER songs, you ignorant cretin!", we should accept the fact that people LOVE the song and, instead, use it as a springboard. "Yeah, he did 'Cars', and if you liked that one, maybe you'll like the stuff he's doing NOW, too". There just ain't no reason to be ashamed of "Cars", folks. I still listen to it, and I'll bet more than a few of you do, too. Come out of the closet! Sit your friends and family down and calmly explain to them that, yes, you still love "Cars". They may not understand at first, but eventually, they'll come to accept you as you are. ;-) OK, I don't know how to finish this, so I'll just stop. / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / "Wash your hands after going to the bathroom or playing cards." / --Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Babylon 5 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 20:40:13 -0600 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: Administrivia Before anyone asks me about it, yes, I'm aware that the format of the table of contents of the Digest changed recently, so that now it shows the email address of the poster of each message along with the subject, as follows (from yesterday's Digest): > 1) SINGLES!, > 2) New "Thing" from London Town, > 3) PollMaster (and drivel), > 4) N/A, > 5) Digest (07/28/2002 18:01) (#2002-110), > 6) Top 5 singles, > 7) smack to the forehead, > 8) Top 5 "Children", > 9) Singles, > 10) Another fan in Southam??, I didn't change the setup, but I *DID* upgrade the server (Mdaemon 5.0.4 to Mdaemon 6.0.3). It's a 3 track cd with an embossed silver cover of some cartoon girl. The tracks are Magic, You Walk in My Soul, Play Like God. All from the Sacrifice cd. I see the album on eBay all the time, I never pay attention cause I already have it. And it's a waste of time IMO (both the album and the single which I had to order through a comic book shop as I recall). I would assume the single comes up as well. I'll keep an eye out for it. My video has the track list: Berserker Metal Remind me to Smile The Iceman Comes Cold Warning Down in the Park I Die You Die My Dying Machine Cars We Are Glass This is New Love AFE While the DVD lists the following: We Are Glass Berserker Remind me to Smile Sister Surprise Music for Chameleons The Iceman Comes Cold Warning This Prison Moon My Dying Machine We Take Mystery This is New Love. Having said that, the track list on the packaging for the video matches the DVD. Can anyone explain this? I would have thought that the video set list would be more sensible for release on DVD as it includes Cars and AFE, which would probably appeal to a more general audience. Were two different videos released? Is it possible to obtain a video of the complete concert. Now the sad bit. While I have the DVD, I do not have a player, so I will have to await someone else to review it before I know what it is like. I read a review of it that mentioned an interview at the start. Is this correct? Is the track list on the DVD packaging correct?
