I would never have bothered to try and count all the individual tracks...but now that you've done it, it's frelling fantastic! > >What about "Redirected Mail" and "The Sailor In Love With The Sea"? > >Do those count? I would count "Sailor In Love With The Sea" because it was specifically written for him to sing by Stephen Merritt. And by the way....I really love that song. It's so unusual to hear Gary sing someone else's music...he has a lovely voice. (much snipped) >Still with me? Have your calculator handy? > >So, all told, that's 300. I'm not going to argue with you. I was basing this on some calculations that I and Matthew Holbrook did back around 1996 - I seem to remember that we were quite close to 300 at that point, and that was before both Exile and Pure. Again, not to be argumentative, but I'm just now taking a peek at my own (long-abandoned) webbsite, and at the final update of August 25th 1998, I've got 299 listed. With "Pure", that would bring us to 310, or 312 if we count the two recent instrumentals from "Exposure" (well, one on the disc, one floating around as a bootleg MP3). Alas, my listings are by song title, not by disc, so a side-by-side comparison with your list is difficult, and to be honest I just ain't got the time or inclination to do it. :-) You might wanna have a look though. As I've said twice already, this isn't because I want to argue the point, but rather: if you can find the songs that appear on my list and that don't appear on yours (which would seem a logical certainty), we could then debate whether those additional songs "deserve" to be on the list. :-) >> At what point do we draw the line? > >Now THERE'S the real question! > >For me the selection criteria are: > >- it's a discrete, separate musical entity, not a remix or rerecording >- that Gary sang it or performed the instrumental music I tend to agree, but at the same time the purists might opt for a second list: those songs that Gary *WROTE* or *CO-WROTE*. And that brings to mind two songs that I don't *THINK* appear on your list, the ones he did with Robert Palmer. Well, actually there's a third one, but it does appear on your list because it's Robert's cover of "I Dream Of Wires" (with Gary on keyboards). The others are "Found You Now", which Gary gets a co-writing credit for (I don't remember if he also plays on the track), and "Style Kills". (The former is dull and boring, the latter is quite good). >I count the Nicholson collabs as "Gary songs" because they're original to >his recording of them. Maybe some others would disagree, but let's think >about this for a moment. "Change Your Mind" most people would count as a >"Gary song" and yet he wrote neither the lyrics nor the music; that was >Roger Odell and Bill Sharpe. It's so much considered a part of Gary's >ouevre that it was included in cover form on the Gary tribute album, 'Ghost >of a White Face Clown,' covered by Henry's Life In Hell. If "Change Your >Mind" counts, then so do the Nicholson collabs. Not to mention "Stormtrooper In Drag", for the same reason. In these particular cases, the songs may not have been written BY him, but they were written FOR him specifically to sing. >Similarly, I count "No Shelter" as a "Gary song" because even though Mike >Smith wrote the music, Gary performed it. Plus, Prince wrote "U Got The >Look" but it still counts as a song on "Machine + Soul." Those songs aren't >Gary compositions, but they ARE songs that Gary has performed and recorded >and made available on his releases. I think covers should count as well (ie: "1999", "Trois Gymnopedies", etc.), but again, the purists might want a second written-by-Gary list and these wouldn't qualify. >And now for a couple of ringers. > >What about "Redirected Mail" and "The Sailor In Love With The Sea"? > >Do those count? He sang them, did he not? Shouldn't they count every bit >as much as the Nicholson collabs or "Change Your Mind" or the original "New >Thing From London Town"? I don't even know what "Redirected Mail" is. "Sailor In Love With The Sea" should count if, as you say, any of the Nicholson stuff counts, or the Radio Heart stuff, or "New Thing", etc. Anyways, take a look at my list, and see if you can DISAGREE with any of those songs being "on the list". Again, that list dates back to August of 1998, and thus will not include anything released in the time since then. The list is at: http://webb.garynuman.info/noisenoise/tracks/index.html Here's a good place to maybe start the debate: my list of 299 "songs" also includes "Interval 1", "Interval 2", and "Interval 3" from Outland. Do hohokam count as Numan produced their singles? what about Caroline monroes 'The Picture'? At least it's not quite as difficult as trying to compile a similar list of Marc Almond's output... toni ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2002 13:47:50 +0200 From: "Hansi Slanec" Subject: Where are more tracks? > > Foo. The best thing to do is cover several statistics: Number of Numan compositions Number of Numan 'songs' [this then excludes instrumentals] Number of songs on which Gary sings Number of songs by other composers performed by Gary Number of Numan compositions not performed by Gary Personally, I think the most telling one is the number of Numan compositions, including, of course, Human tracks...
