All I have is my memory, but I know for a fact that Cars was #1 in Canada, and was on the top-40 for something like 3 or 4 months - it was MASSIVE here. Are 'Friends' Electric? also had a high chart placing, though I don't think it hit #1. I Die: You Die, which was his next single here after Cars, didn't do that well - I think it made it into the top 30, but that's about it. >I definitely recommend Robert Palmer's "Clues" album to the true Numan fan. >Gary plays on and co-wrote "Found You Now", a very Numan-ish tune, and >Robert's cover of "I Dream of Wires", which was released before Telekon came >out. Peace! I just checked on www.cdnow.com and they're still selling it for $11.49 - are you sure it's out of print? They've got sound samples from each track, and I note with some dismay that under "Genre", they've classified this album under "Oldies". Not me - in fact, I remember tuning in to that broadcast specifically because the week before, they said "join us next week when our musical guest will be Gary Numan" or somesuch, and I already knew who he was (though I can't remember if it was because I'd heard "Cars" or "AFE" by that time). >But before I do I should give any procrastinators a last chance to offer >their own entries since I never said what the deadline would be, so I'll >keep it open through this weekend. According to Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-1999, Gary Numan had only one chart entry in the Billboard Top 100 Singles Charts. Cars entered the charts Feb 16, 1980 (with a star) at #81 and was on the charts for a total of 25 weeks, peaking at Number 9 on June 7, 1980 Top Ten Week of June 7, 1980 #1 - Funky Town - Lipps Inc #2 - Coming Up - Paul McCartney #3 - Biggest Part of Me - Ambrosia #4 - Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer - Kenny Rogers & Kim carnes #5 - Call Me - Blondie #6 - The Rose - Bette Midler #7 - Against the Wind - Bob Seger #8 - Hurts so Bad - Linda Ronstadt #9 - Cars - Gary Numan #10 - Little Jeanie - Elton John Wow, that's a mind trip on the way back machine... I had ALL those records. LOL (now I have all of them on CD!) (except for maybe Ambrosia, but probably on some 80's comp somewhere...) I LOVED Funkytown... roller disco YES!! Well, Saturday Night Live was a 'must see' show for me back then, and Gary's performances of "Praying To The Aliens" (complete with the 'bouncing ball lyrics') and of course "Cars" hooked me for all this time.  He was so robotic, and cool in the ways that he moved about that I ran our and bought The Pleasure Principle the very next day.  I thought his music and voice were great from day one.  If I had to name a key date in my own personal Numan history, February 16, 1980 would be the date that my obsession started.  My mother and father still think it's a fad that I'll grow out of.
