Well, Mark kicked things off so if he wants to run with it, I think he should be allowed first crack. But if he'd rather hand it off to somebody who did an EXCELLENT job with the last one, well, I'd vote for ya. :-) Mark, whaddaya say? >Which then begs the question, what about "Redirected Mail" and "The Sailor >In Love With The Sea"? Yes and yes. That's my thinking, anyway. (That >second one came within striking distance of nabbing the number five spot on >my list, but lost out just because Gary actually wrote "Glitter & Ash"-- >which makes it a little more "his.") The "official" version of Exposure is on the Exposure album and is an instrumental, something completely new. No word from Gary as to whether it will later be incorporated into a song on his next album. The version of Exposure that was floating around prior to this album's release is not, in fact, a Numan track - but Gary's on record (at www.numan.net) as saying he wishes he'd written it. Me too: it's VERY "Numan", and is much better than the "official" Exposure. >> 2) After doing so, allow those who've voted to change their >> votes > >Obviously, anybody should be able to change her or his vote anytime before >the totals are counted up and posted. (Well, maybe even then.) Excellent! OK everybody, now that Ben's given us a list, maybe you could have a quick look and see if there's anything you missed. If so, feel free to recast your vote (but do note that it's a recast, just to make Ben or Mark's job a bit easier, ok?) Now, as for my own top five list, it is as follows: 1) Survival - amazing beat! 2) River - sounds very Northern Canadian, especially the loon calls :-) 3) Noise, Noise 4) Time To Die 5) Trois Gymnopedies (1st movement) / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / I went into this bar and sat down next to a pretty girl. She looked at / me and said, "Hey, you have two different colored socks on." I said, / "Yeah, I know, but to me they're the same because I go by thickness." / --Steven Wright ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Sep 2002 20:34:14 -0500 From: "Mark V. Well, to be honest I had never really planned on actually "running" the poll, so I think this will work out just fine. Ben did an extraordinary job with the last one, so it would be excellent if he could do it again. When I posted my favorite B-Sides, I did so because things were quiet on the list and I knew somebody was running a B-Side poll after the singles one. Perhaps I jumped the gun and confused some people, but I shall now formally bow out from any glory or responsibility resulting from the proper execution of the B-Sides poll. Btw, if the final results are going to be presented in that brilliant radio format again, I have the "Warriors" and "I, Assassin" B-sides on good quality digital format. This is assuming that one of these makes the top 5...*cough* "The Image Is"...*cough* -Mark Anderson _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2002 12:28:26 +1000 From: Bart Tieman Subject: Top 5 B Sides This message is in MIME format. Thanks to Ben for putting together the eligible list. My #1 pick has a great memory attached to it. I was in London the summer of 1982 during the Falklands War...and I have a picture of the wall in Charing Cross tube station where someone had scrawled, "they could give us a war just to keep us amused". Very fitting then and now. 1 We Are So Fragile 2 On Broadway 3 Blue Eyes 4 Bridge? Simple as that; I don't think (much of) anything else would qualify. I remember "Metal" being the b-side of "Cars" when I bought the single but I can't vote for it, as it was on Pleasure Principle as well. I'll go over the list and make my choices soon... Mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2002 19:05:09 +0100 From: "David Dickinson" Subject: b-sides In the last digest Ben was asked to present a list of eligible b-sides, and then went on to argue the toss about what is a b-side! Surely the ONLY criteria for what constitutes a b-side is: WAS IT ON THE B-SIDE OF A SINGLE (or extra track on a cd single)? If it was then it's a b-side, if it wasn't then it most definitely is not. How can Don't be a dummy be classed as a b-side? A game called echo (and any other UNRELEASED track) cannot qualify as a b-side, surely? These tracks weren't released by Gary at the time of writing them, not on single (A or B side) or Album. They only came out years later as extra tracks on cd re-issues of albums. My top 5 (actual) b-sides is: 1.Asylum 2.We Are So Fragile 3.Exhibition 4.I Don't Believe 5.The Fear This was actually tougher than picking 5 a sides, as he's had so many excellent b-sides. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Sep 2002 19:46:42 +0100 From: Dryad Subject: Top 5 B sides...
