As I was compiling the b-list, I was thinking to myself, "I should go look at my 'Outland' reissue disc, just to see if it has any b's I'm not thinking of... NAH!" Nobody else caught it either, though, so I guess I can be forgiven (and I guess it's not one of his most loved b's). "Shame" So, that list once again, complete this time (I hope) is: Oh! The judges have ruled that one "in play.") > I shall now formally bow out from any glory or > responsibility resulting from the proper execution > of the B-Sides poll. YAY! I'm the man! I'M THE MAN! (Did I just say that out loud?) Oh, er, uh, I mean... ahem, yes, I humbly accept. > Surely the ONLY criteria for what constitutes a b-side is: > WAS IT ON THE B-SIDE OF A SINGLE (or extra track > on a cd single)? If it was then it's a b-side, if it wasn't then it > most definitely is not. That certainly would be a simpler formulation, Michael and David. I think TOO simple. Some of the demos landed onto b'sides with the EP pressings BB did. Does that count? Let me ask an analogous question that might help illuminate what I'm trying to get at. Is "I Die: You Die" on 'Telekon' or not? Gary selected it out for the album pressing, but BB put it back on for the US release. It's on it. It's not. My thinking about this category is to look at the songs that Gary has segregated as "less than" the rest of his output. In that sense the demos share a commonality with the b's. But look, since we're all devoted fans and we all love every last thing he's done-- even his terrible, awful, vile, nasty stuff ("Hey, but I LIKE 'Strange Charm!'")-- then why not have a poll where we come up with "the best of his worst!" Or what he thinks is his worst anyway. And if we're looking at those recordings that have gotten that selection criterion, it doesn't make sense to me to include remixes or redos of well-known songs. They actually made the cut onto albums. > I swear I haven't heard a third of the ones on Ben's list, Aw, Dryad! I'm sorry... and at the same time I'm excited for you. You're missing out, but then again that means there's a whole new world of Gary music waiting for you! I remember when I picked up my copies of 'Asylum 1' and 'Asylum 2' having missed out on all the singles and b's. With those acquisitions I discovered about two complete albums worth of Gary material I had never even known existed! It's like having your sweetie say, "I ate the last of the Ben & Jerry's," feeling disappointed, then going into the feezer and moving the coffee can to find... there's still a treat waiting to be enjoyed! > wondering if the instrumental of DiTP qualifies as a b side The jury's still out, Dryad. Still out. Ben * * * Do you think you can love me? I am no one. ------------------------------------------- Introducing NetZero Long Distance Unlimited Long Distance only $29.95/ month!
