I don't >understand how I can LOVE someone's music and not even LIKE the person. That's a shame, Rod, it really is. And yet I think I can understand where you're coming from. Gary sometimes isn't as "likeable" as we might hope. Then again, neither am I, and maybe that's why I *DO* like (and respect) him as a person. I probably haven't had as much face time with him as you have, but I have had some: after-gig shows, some consulting work that Matt Holbrook and I did for him when he was getting NuWorld off the ground, and quite a bit of email. I think I see a lot of my own personality in him, which is probably why I do like him and why we also did have a bit of a falling out at one time (my fault). :-) I do have a theory though. You've read his biog - you know that there was a time, late 80's and early 90's, culminating with Machine + Soul, where he was allowing those around him more and more influence on his career, his decisions, even his music. Not only was that not helping, it was hurting tremendously. And then he made the decision to just go back to what he does best, and fuck whether or not radio warms up to him. He was gonna do his thing, his way, for better or for worse. If he was going to fail, he would fail ON HIS OWN. I gotta respect that. Yes, he's likely to make mistakes, but I still gotta respect that. So now along comes Rod Reynolds trying to orchestrate the promotion of his back catalogue. Rod wants only the best, Rod is a Numan *FAN*, but hey... a lot of Numan fans have tried to help in the past and it's almost always backfired. I can see why he wasn't at all enthusiastic Rod, and if I were you, I'd try hard not to take it too personally. Everything you were trying to do, to HELP him, flew in the face of his new philosophy: to take charge of his own career. Now I know there's some contradiction here. He's been trying to get "American representation" for many moons, and what's American representation going to do for him once he gets it? Give him advice on his career, that's what. Nobody said Gary was the most consistent guy in the world. He's in an absolutely unique position - so I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, and forgive him for the mistakes he makes as he plows through completely uncharted territory. / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / My friend Sam has one leg.
