Some of the following might sound critical or negative, but that is really not my intention. My purpose is one of explanation. I do want to say that Gary and his Dad have never been less than cordial to me. I have met hundreds of famous people in the last ten years in LA, and I cannot say the same for several of them. Some famous people are downright awful, particularly given that I feel any artist should cherish their fans. Because without whom... literally they would be nothing. (How can they not see that?!!) And that's something that Gary obviously understands. I have met most of my favorite singers and had them be, well, less than friendly, and others be extremely gracious, and several hundred in between or undetermined. LOL. And you certainly come away from the friendly ones with much more enthusiasm for your support than the ones who dismiss you. (ie. I will think long and hard before I ever buy another B-52's album.) I always think, one day you will come out of a door somewhere and there will be no one waiting for you, and you will NOT be happy about it. I can't remember specifically what it was in Praying to the Aliens, but I distinctly remember at one point thinking that Gary and I would likely never be friends. I remember the feeling quite clearly, because at the time, it was a revelation, and it saddened me. I vaguely remember his thoughts about America, and guns, and his attitudes towards people (which may or may not be a British thing). When I have the chance I'll skim through it again to see if I can get specifics. Then, as I said, working with him. Which was really NOT the nail in the coffin, just disappointing on my end (which I explained in a previous post). But partly, his dismissal of his previous works... is, a little insulting, in that I can honestly say I can listen to "Dance" and be moved by it, entertained, excited, whatever, and to think that he's not into it, is a little embarrassing. Speaking as someone who bought every single record, every single, every cd, every remaster, every compilation... would the man himself not 'approve'? That I was so excited to me working on those cds and he was so completely disinterested that he never even opened the package of them from America? And then, some of his lyrics... I find his negative attitude towards sooo many things, well, disturbing. I definitely don't agree with his philosophy. I understand, though, and it's really not a judgement, as I said, I completely love his music (some more that others). I am just a little over some of the religion issues he carries around with him, and it saddens me that he still feels that way, only because he could be much happier, which is something I truly wish for him (and everyone). I've thought of this before, and realized, that then, maybe his music would be more like ABC instead of Numan. As much as I love ABC (mainly their first two albums) - not a good thing. So sometimes I ponder if the downer 'tude could be an act, a posturing, since with the industrial noisy guitar sound that he's into now, the lyrics need to be fairly gothic and negative. But from interviews, I assume that this is really the way he feels. I'd love to sit in a room with him and "interview" him (ie with a specific purpose), but I don't feel like we'd ever 'hang out' and be friends, partly because I'm sure I would annoy him as much as he would me. That's what I meant. Rod Los Angeles PS Bono was very nice to me, the one time I got to meet him (and Edge). But no, I wouldn't want to spend a day 'hanging' with him, either. :o) > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > Hmmm..I met Gary before a concert in Franfurt, Germany a few years ago.
