My excuse: well, first, it was just a matter of not having the time available. Then, once I had the time, I ran into some technical problems with my microphone when it came time to voicing the top ten countdown presentation. Indeed, while I think I've done a much better job this time around, I had to "cover up" some bad sound by playing some low-level music overtop of my voicing in places. :-) That said, the results are NOW ONLINE. You can see them here: http://digest.garynuman.info/toptenbsides2002.html For those of you able to download and listen to an 11-megabyte MP3, I recommend that you download the COUNTDOWN first - it runs about 47 minutes. That way there's some suspense as you listen and wonder if the songs you voted for made the top ten. :-) After that, or for those of you unable to download, there's also comprehensive final results available. Hope you enjoy - I had fun putting it together! / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / I like to pick up hitchhikers. When they get in the car I like to say, / "Sooo, how far did you THINK you were going anyway?", or "Put on your / seat belt. I want to try something. I saw it once in a cartoon, but I / think I can do it." / --Steven Wright ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 19:00:37 -0600 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: New Poll - Covers & Collaborations I'm pretty sure we've done this poll before, a couple of years back, but people come and people go and tastes change, so I thought what the heck: we're having lotsa fun with these polls, so why not do this one again? We've done top-five singles and top-five b-sides, and now I'm suggesting we go with top-five covers and collaborations. To be eligible, a song must: 1) Be either another artist's cover of a Gary Numan song (examples: Foo Fighters' "Down In The Park", Nine Inch Nails' "Metal"), or a collaboration between Gary and another artist (or artists), regardless of whether or not it is a Numan-written song (examples: Robert Palmer's "I Dream Of Wires", on which Gary plays keyboards, and "Radio Heart", written by Hugh Nicholson and performed by other musicians, with Gary contributing vocals only). and 2) Not be included on a "Numan" release. This would rule out "guest artists" such as Bill Nelson. It would rule out Bill Sharpe's contribution to the Strange Charm album, but would NOT rule out the "Automatic" album and the other Sharpe/Numan singles. Since I'm proposing the poll, I guess I can cast the first ballot. Here goes! 1) "Cars" - Fear Factory w/Gary Numan (released as single). What can I say? I still love the song, and Fear Factory's cover simply ROCKS. It's clear these guys "get" what the song means, even though they've taken quite a different approach to it. 2) "We Are So Fragile" - Jesus Jones (from the Random album). An excellent song with some REALLY stellar instrumentation and vocals. 3) "Poetry And Power" - Gravity Kills (also from Random). A completely different take on the original, and REALLY hard-driving. Probably not a hit with the anti-Pure crowd. :-) 4) "Down In The Park" - Marilyn Manson (b-side of "Lunchbox" single). Has that distinctive "Manson sound", which you either love or hate, yet also remains fairly faithful to the original - a true "tribute". 5) "I Live Your Dream" - Projekt Pitchfork (several versions included on their "I Live Your Dreams" single CD, one of which was remixed by Numan). Talk about taking an otherwise run-of-the-mill song and breathing new life into it. Gary keeps the original melody but otherwise chucks out the rather-boring instrumentation and "Purifies" it. Rock on! Awright, let's get those ballots coming in! Hey Ben, how do you feel about being the official vote tabulator again? :-) / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / Any priest or shaman must be presumed guilty until proved innocent. / -- Lazarus Long, "Time Enough For Love" (Robert Heinlein) ------------------------------ End digest@garynuman.info Digest [09/27/2002 18:01] --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced, moderated, and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, davdat@allmusic.com, Joey@GaryNuman.Info Back Issues: http://digest.garynuman.info ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: digest@garynuman.info If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: listserv@GaryNuman.info and include this line as the first line of your message body: SUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) or UNSUBSCRIBE digest@garynuman.info (email address) (email address is optional but useful if you have multiple addresses) If you want to switch between receiving Digests or individual posts, again send to listserv@GaryNuman.Info and include either of these in your message body: NORMAL digest@garynuman.info or DIGEST digest@garynuman.info ------------------------------------------------------------------ Please note: this mailing list is configured to automatically unsubscribe you if mail to your mailbox goes undeliverable for any reason.
