What I had in mind were "any songs in which Gary is one of multiple artists involved". This therefore includes covers (he wrote it, or he's performing somebody else's song), collaborations like Sharpe + Numan (each co-wrote, each performed), and remixes (either somebody else remixing him, or him remixing someone else). Numan has to be involved, but so does somebody else (and I don't mean members of his own band either). His remixes of Projekt Pitchfork's "I Live Your Dream" and Nancy Boy's "Are 'Friends' Electric?" both qualify. In the former case, he "remixed" (well, since most people insist on calling it that) somebody else's song, and in the latter, he "remixed" somebody else's cover of his own song. All of "The Mix" and the two Random compilations qualify as he wrote all the songs and also contributes vocals to "The Mix" (also "Techno Army" - blah!). The point? All of the material we're talking about doesn't qualify for any of the other polls we're running... "best single", "best b-side", "best song", "best album", and the like (with some SMALL overlap, ie: "On Broadway" and "Trois Gymnopedies" are both eligible for this poll and both made the top ten in the "b-sides" poll). If you ask a fan what is favourite "Numan" album, he/she isn't likely to name "Automatic" among them, even if he/she thinks it's one of the greatest albums of all time. "I Live Your Dream", "Style Kills", and "Found You Now" aren't likely to even be thought of if you ask a Numan fan what the best "Numan song" is. This poll is a chance for all this "overlooked" material to get a chance in the spotlight - and there is some EXCELLENT material to choose from (of the three polls we've done recently, this one by far was the most difficult one for me to choose a top five - I'd have been happier if we could have voted for, say, our top twenty faves, heh heh!) I dunno though... the votes don't seem to be coming in fast and furious, so maybe I'm the only one who thinks this poll is a good idea. :-) / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. / --Steven Wright ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 17:18:23 +0100 From: "antonio" Subject: Covers / collaborations Covers - 1 - Yangste Tong - AFE (hey! my mate was in that band and i don't have an mp3 of it anymore - their site is down!) 2 - Marliyn Manson - DITP 3 - Nine Inch Nails - Metal 4 - PWEI - Friends 5 - Kenickie - I'm an Agent Collaborations - 1 - Paul Gardiner - Stormtrooper In Drag 2 - Dubstar - ReDirected mail 3 - Fear Factory - Cars 4 - Project Pitchfork - I Live Your Dream 5 - Tik and Tok - Show Me Something Real toni ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 17:09:16 +0000 From: "Colin Linskey" Subject: 'Live' tracks poll... Hello everyone!!! Excellent polls we've had, but not everyone has internet access... Interesting that at www.afe.net, favourite Pure track was Listen To My Voice, but Gary releases RIP as single... But what about 1979's 'live' On Broadway. That must rank as one of his best interepretations ever!!! Probably better than the flat interpretations of the Prince songs U Got The Look, & 1999... :-) What do others think???
