It makes me think he's black, or mixed. It also reminds me to ask what's the deal about that photo inside of Living Ornaments '79, I thought I heard someone say once the afro was a wig and that it fell off, or is there another explanation like maybe a haircut. Anyone have an idea what "The Man" has been up to nowadays? Out of curiosity from anyone who may have seen him play in the past few years, does he use a ride cymbal? I've noticed that he never used one playing with Numan, and was just wondering if he omitted it for Numan, or does he not use a ride period. Thanks. >Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 04:32:02 -0700 (PDT) From: keith thripp Subject: hair --0-2092640800-1034422322=:87335 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi Guy's What on earth is going on ? iv been off the buzz for a while but, what ever next ? leave the poor bloke alone, gary is gary whatever he does or looks like. To me he has allways been of a smart , clean and fresh image. Is his hair style more important now then his music . If so then we should start a pole of the worst hair dooozzz ever to grace the music scene 1 Axel Rose 2 Right Said Fred 3 Cedric "the man" Sharpley __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? " Troy Hell, I was impressed! You made a pretty interesting and creative video, and although at first I felt your using still images was just a matter of limited resources, once I watched the entire video I realized it was very creative (as was the camera work). Compared to the crap videos we see on MTV all the time (re: George Michael), your work is far more impressive. You have a talent at remixes and now videos, and this may be just my opinion, but I think you have enough skill to do this professionally if you wished. Cheers! M2 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Oct 2002 10:27:17 -0500 From: "Val & Ben Iglar-Mobley" Subject: covered and smothered I think there are some problems we're coming up against in running a poll of our favorite covers and collabs. For one, there are just so darn many out there to choose from. That may not sound like a problem for the avid collector (more of a motivator, really) but it is a problem in coming up with results for a poll. It means that we're not getting a lot of overlap between entries, so we really won't have any tabulated results other than: "Everybody seems to like different titles!" We could tackle that particular problem by expanding the limit of titles any one person could submit for an entry, like to ten instead of five. That way, we'd get more titles submitted and it would be more likely we'd begin to see some overlap. This idea makes some sense when we consider the huge number of possible candidates from which we can choose for this poll. We had 47 titles we could choose for our singles poll, 66 for the b-sides poll, but Hansi Slanec counts the covers at 128 (and I can promise that he's left out at least 20 or so). The law of averages dictates that we'll get less overlap drawing from such an increased set of choices. Unfortunately, another part of the problem is that not so many of us have had access to all these titles. Sure, we can get Gary's albums easily enough (if nowhere else than at least over the net), but these individual little covers are danged elusive! Who can collect them all to make an informed judgement of our likes? Maybe somebody who's found them online in MP3 format, but that hardware is not nearly as ubiquitous as our CD players. So we've got way too many titles to choose from, and too few of us having gotten to hear any of them. Several somebodies were asking for compiled lists of what songs count. Well, I'm not the person to post that information here. For one, I still have my personal questions about the selection criteria (and it sounds like other people do, too). And for another, Hansi has researched a lot of these and put that information on his web site, and I think he deserves the "hits" to his site that we'd give him by visiting there instead of stealing the list and reposting it here. http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/7042/nucovers.htm (Be warned: there are a lot of graphics there; visit only if you have a fast processor and modem. Note to Hansi: not everybody does!) Hansi's list is pretty darned extensive, but with a few holes. How come you didn't list the full set of song titles from Terre Thaemlitz' album 'Replicas Rubato'? Or from 'TechnoArmy'? And I can name several covers that you've missed entirely: The Borg - Are 'Friends' Electric?, Replicas, We Are So Fragile Erik Burke - Are 'Friends' Electric? Flux Oersted - Complex The Girl Pool - Cars Mase - Don't Matter What ("Cars" sample) Rollerball - Cars Solenoid - Metal Sticky - Down In The Park Thought Industry - Metal Timb The Enchanter - Down In The Park Uthanda - Cars Victims Of Luxury - Cars And then what about all the songs performed by Carnival during their Numan Night 1999 concert, and beyond? Tracks The Machman We Are So Fragile Me! I Disconnect From You You Are You Are You Are In My Vision Are 'Friends' Electric? Metal I Die: You Die America Absolution ...and I'm sure there are plenty of others that I don't know about. With all that working against us, I have an idea for how to make this poll more manageable and more easily answerable. What about a poll ranking the tribute ALBUMS from most to least favorite? I think probably more of us have the tribute albums than have a full complement of all the obscure little individual cover songs artists have done, no matter how widely passed around in electronic form they may have been. Let me see if I have a full list of the albums that have been recorded in tribute to the Animal: Ghost Of A White Face Clown (1995) TechnoArmy (1996) Random 1 (1997) Random 2 (1997) The Mix (1998) Terre Thaemlitz - Replicas Rubato (1999) Reload - Tubeway Navy Jim Collins - Church of Gary Numan: A Dark Celebration We each could then take all eight of those and rank them from #1 (which we consider to be the best of the lot) down to #8 (the least-best). But then wait a minute. Didn't Gary say on his web site that another "remix" album is due to be released imminently? As in within a month or two? Wouldn't it make sense then to wait until that one is released so that it could be included in our rankings? Shoot, and I thought I had a way out of the tangle. And while I'm asking about soon-to-be-releases, does anyone know if 'Exposure' is going to get a US issue or not? Greetings all, i subscribed a couple weeks ago and have kept mostly schtumm in order to get a good measure of my ignorance and list practice, etc. - apparently i'm incredibly ignorant and the list is wonderfully typical, huzzah! re: gary's hair - well, the industrial boy shave and fluff has been fairly typical for a number of years in the goth/industrial scene, so i can't find fault with the appropriateness of it. could be me, though: i'm used to it, i see gary pics and say "oh, industrial boy, kuwaii!" rather than "what the HELL is on your head, dude?" also, practically speaking, just as older women shouldn't wear sparkly or glittery make-up {it emphasizes lines & skin texture}, a softer older man's face isn't necessarily complimented by a tight, firm hair-do. so there's my 10rubles on hair and glamour. muah-ha-ha. oh, and i lied about this list being typical, it seems to be saturated with technically skilled and musically talented sorts. "wow!" i say. you lot know too much, and seem to be the people behind all the numan fansites. nice to meet you! cheers, ~Kymba ===== "Heaven produces myriads of things to nourish man; Man never does one good to recompense Heaven.
