Anderson" Subject: My Centurion I'm pretty sure we are talking about separate incidences here. The instance most people seem to be discussing is the emergency landing in Gary's passenger plane. However, I'm fairly sure the song is about the time his plane ALMOST crashed over the ocean during his 2nd round-the-world attempt. Here's some quotes from "Praying to the Aliens" (page 119...)"Bob Thompson found an aeroplane. He selected a Cessna 210 Centurion, a high-wing, six seater, single-engine machine...We would travel light, when it came to clothes and personal items, because we had to find room for extra kit such as parachutes and a life raft" So that's the set-up for the round-the-world trip... (page 136...) "We'd flown about 1,200 miles, about halfway, when both engines quit...Nothing worked. We were going down. We descended through the cloud. The aeroplane was strangely quiet except for the whistling of air passing the airframe and the whirring of gyros that continued to tell us the awful truth... We were over the Pacific, there was no one around for a thousand miles in any direction and, under the clouds, it was absolutely black... The eerie whistling of air seemed like a siren call fo death itself and I began to hate it.... Seven hours later we landed in Hawaii." So that quote establishes some language links to the song. "No sign of life, only the whisper of air, etc.." There you have it. I belive the song "My Centurion" is based on the second round-the-world trip, not the media disaster int he UK. Regardless, even in that case he was not flying the Centurion. I think I have proved my dorkiness for the evening, -Mark V. First off I thought my Kenwood CD player had died after 10 years service, although it was on it's way to an early retirement, I found it to play other discs ok. Played on my daughters £30 CD Cassette unit....well some of them, like Fred says, sometimes not happening in the same place twice. I don't know if there is an easy explanation for our troubles, may cheaply produced copies of the albums, does anyone know? Must be more like ours. Maybe with it being different each time, we've all thought it's our own equipment and not down to the pressing our production f the actual CDs..... I am hoping to buy a DVD player in the next year, and I hope that will help. I just thought my CD was dying, after service since 1986, that is hard to complain about tho. I have four of the remastered Beggars Banquet cd's; Repl, P.Prin, Telek, and Dance. On my discman they all skip insessantly. On my boombox they don't skip as bad. On my component system the glitches are rare but still happen. None of the skips or glitches happen in the same place twice. On my brothers computer they don't glitch at all. Any suggestions!
