Interesting question. I have never had a problem with past girlfriends and listening to Gary's music, and my wife likes his music although I don't think she would have gotten into it without my introducing it to her. However, I am just an "average" fan of Gary's, I mean I like his music and I would make every effort to see him in concert if he came locally (that said, I have only seen him once, in Frankfurt, Germany in 1998; and it was an hour and a half drive to get to the club. Well worth it, though, as we got to meet him before the gig, and the show was great!). But I am not like some that will make great strides to see him in concert, and who will go to numerous gigs on the same tour. Nor do I have any Numan posters and only 1 Numan t-shirt (from the 98 tour). However, I have been listening to him since 1978 thanks to a Brit I knew in high school who introduced me to Gary's music, and I do admire his talent; but I save my hero worship for true heroes, and just consider myself a "fan". Sorry, that seems to have gotten off the subject, but my thoughts just trickled down to my fingertips onto the keyboard... Cheers! Hello to the Numanoids of the World! Jim "The Machman" Napier here celebrating 13 years of NAGNFC-ness this month. I've been receiving countless e-mails from friends and strangers asking where the NAGNFC website went. I announced in early summer that the old address was soon to be replaced by the spiffy new web address: http://themachman.garynuman.info This has come to pass. If anyone who has an old link to me would be awesome enough to change it, that would be Numan-tacular. Especially as there is an incredible amount of new stuff this month. There are now 2 illustrated riveting chapters from the September Exposure Tour as well as mp3s from the tour so you can hear the show as you read about it. There are some great new mp3s up as well now such as a crispy clean sounding Warriors 1983 show as well as some obscure Tessa Niles/Rob Dean/Dick Morrisey stuff. Keep your eyes peeled for some rareness from Joe Hubbard's band Hubbard's Cupboard as well within the next week as well as still more exclusive pics from Glasgow in September. Well this all just scratches the surface really. Stop by today, we have fresh donuts and cider in the lobby. James, who went on to join Models, has just released his autobiography, which has a whole chapter on his experiences with Gary. Assuming his memory serves him correctly (there's a lot of drug and alcohol abuse here...), he had already released the first album before meeting Gary, when supporting him on his Australian tour in 1980. Apparently they became friends and Gary agreed to produce James' next album for him and provide his band as back-up. James was lured back to England with the thought that he would have Billy Currie on the album, but was disappointed when it turned out to be Gary, Paul and Jess. Without giving too much of the story away, the whole thing fell in a heap, and it is not even made clear whether the album saw the light of day - it certainly isn't mentioned in the discography at the back of the book. There was however a single called 'Automatic Crazy' from the sessions. From memory you'll also find James' name credited on 'Telekon' for handclaps or something. There are some amusing anecdotes as would be indicated by section titles such as 'Here in his car, he feels safest of all' and 'We'll fix it in the mix', although it's probably something you could skim through in the bookshop. Granted it's unlikely you'll be able to do this in downtown Troy, Brussels or even Staines though. If you feel like lashing out around USD15 or UKP10 (probably less) for the sake of the one chapter (there are at least two references to Gary's farting prowess, and there's a no-doubt rare photo of them both in the studio if that helps...), it's called "I Am The Voice Left From Drinking", ISBN 0 7322 7440 0, published by Harper Collins (www.harpercollins.com.au). I haven't checked but it might be available from www.angusrobertson.com.au or www.ozbooks.com .
